2021 – It’s Time!

You almost didn’t get a blog post this week for two reasons. One, I didn’t have time. Two, Syndrome called me out for not posting a blog after pre-season round #1, so I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction. The Portuguese people are peaceful people, but we can be stubborn as a mule! So, why have I posted this blog? Because every damn weekend, early in the morning, we get this little woodpecker who secures himself to the side of house and goes to town pecking at the aluminum framing around one of the upstairs bedroom windows. And it is LOUD! This little annoying thing keeps pecking and pecking like he’s drilling for oil until I get out of bed and run out to my deck in my old frothy slippers and flannel pajamas and scare the critter away. I just want some peace. It’s not much to ask for, is it?

Frigid temperatures, howling winds and arguments with the KCGC staff…… Yep, it’s officially the start of the 2021 GCCGL season. Let me start by reiterating some of the changes for this season.

  • Tee times have been moved up. The first tee time is at 5:08. Although, I noticed the cart jockey had us going off at 5:06 on his starter’s card. Until I’m told differently, the tee times are:
    • 5:08, 5:16, 5:24, 5:30, 5:36, 5:42
  • Single cart rentals will be charged a $5 “convenience” fee, whatever the hell that means. I’d be curious to hear if anyone else has experienced this new “convenience fee” at other local courses. Bottom line, if you are riding and don’t share a cart, then be prepared to pay an extra $5.

As many of you heard, a GCCGL member had another run-in with Kenton County Golf Course staff last week. The tormenting of the cart jockeys is normally an annual ritual reserved for Syndrome but not this time. This time, it was Snoodles who uncharacteristically went “ape” and gave the old cart jockey a piece of his mind when he was told that he had to share his cart. Well, the old man was having none of that and went back crying to his boss who then immediately jumped on a golf cart, with the cart jockey and tracked down Snoodles who was trying to hit his shot on the first hole. The cart jockey’s boss, let’s call him……”boss-man”, began to scold Snoodles like a teacher scolding a 6 year old who just got caught picking his nose and eating it. Snoodles didn’t like that, especially considering boss-man was half his height. It looked like the student was scolding the teacher! This went back and forth for a few minutes before boss-man left and Snoodles went about his business.

Let’s be perfectly clear, I was NOT there so this is mostly hearsay from Snoodles himself. However, I did get some other insight from other GCCGL members who were in the vicinity and it seems like maybe, just maybe, Snoodles was perhaps…..not himself and maybe, just maybe, a little “aggressive” towards the cart jockey? I don’t know. What I do know is that the KCGC is starting to get on my nerves with these new “rules” and moving the tee times up on us and then rushing us on the tee last week when I emailed them our tee times for this week. I still have the email to prove it. It seems to me that the new management might not be exactly what we’ve been used to in the past. We’ll see how this plays out the rest of this year.

The new GCCGL old man rule allowing old men to tee it up from the front tees went into affect. Ollie took full advantage and will be teeing it up from the old-man tees for the remainder of the season. Newcomer, Jim Allen, also qualifies for this change but has made the decision that he will be teeing it up from the regular tees. Interesting……. very interesting……

We begin play this Thursday on the back side of the Pioneer with the beloved Florida Scramble. Please be on time and ready to tee off at 5:08 sharp. I do not want to be scolded by the boss-man! We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ’em straight!
