Kreyling Korner – Week #3 – 05/05/16

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

MOW - Week 3

Feliz Cinco de Mayo y’all! Only in Kentucky can you add y’all to the end of a Spanish sentence.  The man above is Lee Trevino, probably the most popular Hispanic golfer ever (who was actually born in Dallas, TX to Mexican parents).  Lee, today we salute you!

One week of match-play down and El Commissioner Glossy stands at 1-1 thanks to a week 2 Rayburn victory.

A/B Group – Joe “Cousin Joe” Cook vs Ed “Big Ed” Petryk. I like this battle early in the season.  Protein for Peffercorn (Joe’s team) and Grandpa’s Cough Medicine (Ed’s team) are both within striking distance of first place and a win by either of these gentlemen would certainly assist a climb in the standings.  Historically, the match-up is fairly even with Cousin Joe having a slight edge over Big Ed at 3-2.  Glossy Prediction: Big Ed had a rough week last week on the back 9 of the Willows (as most of us did).  I think Ed’s length overpowers the front 9 of the Pioneer and he ekes out a victory over Cook, 5.5-4.5.

C/D Group – Jason “Cupcake” Nill vs Justin “Legend” Seiter. On paper – this should be an even match-up.  Both of these gentlemen are 10 handicaps and both shot similar scores last week (Cupcake – 52; Seiter – 51).  What interests me most about these two is the disparity in scores historically.  Jason leads the overall series total at 2-0, and quite frankly it isn’t even close.  In the previous two matches, Jason has won 6.5 to 3.5 and 7.5 to 2.5.  Glossy Prediction:  Come on…Cupcake’s on my team, he is going to win 6-4.  He is also going to yell at me for picking him because if he loses it will be a result of the MOW jinx (which, of course, is my fault).

THE KREYLING KORNER

Kreyling Korner - Week 3

Luck seems to be the theme the first couple weeks of the league.  In the week #3 polling question, we asked – who is the unluckiest member of the GCCGL?  The league has spoken!  In a land slide, Senors Lip Gloss and Prince Albert were voted unluckiest golfers with 57% and 43% of the vote, respectively.  I just assumed I sucked at golf, but maybe the saying is true…better lucky than good.

This week, we have statistical analysis to back up the poll results. Captain Cupcake combed the GCCGL database, spending hours calculating averages, compiling bell curves and running regression analyses.   What he found was staggering.  Below is a chart showing the average net scores an OPPONENT shoots against a league member.

Kreyling Korner - Week 3(2)

As you can see, Mitch and I regularly play opponents that shoot below an average par score of 36. I’d also like to point out – Mitch’s scores are roughly based on one year, while mine are based on 5 YEARS! Based on this analysis – I think the league would agree the correct two individuals were awarded the “Unluckiest Golfer” award.  Let’s also revisit the “Luckiest Golfers” in the league – Pete Goldenberg and Danny Roller.  At first glance, it appears Goldie and Snoodles are in the middle of the pack of the A/B group.  However, deeper analysis actually reveals they should be lower on the list.  Turnwald and Schott are in their first year of the league.  Granted both men subbed sparingly in years past, I think most would agree more time/matches are needed to accurately depict how an opponent plays against them.  Throwing out these two, Goldie and Roller fall towards the bottom of the list, as opponents shoot almost one stroke higher than the average par score of 36.  Keep in mind – Pete’s average is based off of 15 years of scores and Danny’s is based off of 9 years of scores.  Put that into perspective: In 15 years and 9 years off data, their opponents average a net score OVER PAR.  If that isn’t luck, I don’t know what is.

One final note – the Portuguese Warrior was voted third unluckiest golfer in the league with 24% of the vote. I get it, everyone likes George.  People consider him trust-worthy (*cough…BS…*cough) and not an A-hole (*cough…bigger BS…*cough).  Looking at the schedule above you will notice Georgie falls to the bottom of the list for the C/D group (and the entire league) as his opponent’s average net score is nearly 3 strokes over par.  Like Goldie, this is based on 15 YEARS OF SCORES.  I don’t care if he is nice – if you voted for George, and 5 of you did, you need to have your head checked.

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
