Kreyling Korner – Week #3 – 05/02/19

Week 3 is as good a week to start as any, let’s get the first edition of the 2019 Kreyling Korner rolling.  Who wants some MOW?

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

A/B Group – Danny “Snoodles” Roller vs. Pete “Goldie” Goldenberg – You know what I love about the GCCGL?  It’s a lot like college football.  The season is short so there is no time to mess around.  We dive right into huge matches right at the beginning of the season.  Just look at week 3 and the match of two GCCGL titans – Snoodles and Goldie.  Historically, these two have met 11 times, the most recent taking place in week 5 of 2018, and the oldest taking place in week 4 of 2007.  The overall record stands with Goldie having the upper hand at 7-4.  Historical stats are all well and good, but they cannot tell a man’s current form.  So far in 2019 Roller is 0-1 with a pretty awful first showing in the first week of match play – 48 (net 42).  I had the privilege of playing with Roller last week, and yes, I did witness the whiff.  It was actually pretty hysterical – and Danny handled it like a champ.  He was standing on a side hill lie and had a really awkward stance.  Once he missed, he turned to the group and we all said, “where did it go?”  He quickly responded with a stern look, “Nowhere.  I missed.”  He regrouped nicely and hit a great follow-up shot.  Regardless, last week was a rare “off” round for Snoodles and I bet he bounces back on the back of the Willows this week.  Pete on the other hand, well he missed last week, but his team did win the Flo-Rida Scramble the week before.  I have no idea how he is playing, but he did get some new clubs and he is hitting it WAY FARTHER this year.  Also, stop me if you have heard this before, but he was THIS CLOSE to a hole in one last weekend.

GLOSSY PREDICTION – tough call on the back of the Willows this season.  I think Roller plays significantly better this week but giving Pete 1 stroke is too much to overcome. Goldie wins 5.5-4.5.

C/D Group – George “Portuguese Warrior” Almeida vs. John “Syndrome” Rayburn – For years Captain Cupcake has been lobbying for GCCGL go pro cameras.  This is a match where these go pros would be perfect.  Can you imagine watching Rayburn get into George’s head for two straight hours!  George wouldn’t even have to write a blog.  Just pop open the website and hit play.  Awful golf and perfect one-liners.  Anyway, these two have met 12 times over the years and the series is tighter than a…never mind…I’m just going to stop that analogy.  George has a slight advantage at 6-5-1.  There last match was in week 19 of the 2018 season with George absolutely smoking Rayburn 8-2.  Does Rayburn still have a bad taste in his mouth from that shellacking, or is that just from the previous weekend’s adventures?  As for current year form, George was a now show last week as he was mourning the passing of a faithful four-legged friend (my deepest condolences PW) and Syndrome posted a smooth 58 (net 42).  While I cannot comment on the state of George’s game, I can comment on the new set of clubs John has.  As I was walking off the green last week, I happened to notice a Scotty Cameron headcover in his bag.  It caught my eye as I had purchased a brand-new putter this year as well.  When I stopped to talk to Syndrome about his recent purchase, he proceeded to show me and entire new set of irons (which he was fitted for) and a new push cart.  All that new equipment has to help his game…right?

GLOSSY PREDICTION – George skipped golf two days after his dog made the journey to the big farm in the sky, so I still think he is in mourning.  Also, John has new clubs and is getting two strokes.  Syndrome wins 6-4.

THE KREYLING KORNER

Unless you have been living under a rock, you are well aware that Tiger Woods won the 2019 Masters and his 15th major.  I’m sure most everyone is also aware that Tiger’s last major victor occurred 11 years prior in 2008 (U.S. Open).  A lot has change in 11 years and in this week’s Kreyling Korner we are going to take at look at 5 things that have changed.  I can’t call this a top-five list because I didn’t have enough time to put in extensive research, but here are some interesting ones, nonetheless.

  1. Anchored Putter Ban – In 2016, golf’s governing bodies determined an anchored putting stroke is no longer legal.   I’m still bitter about this.  For those of you who have been in the league for a while, you will remember I used to use a Taylor Made Spider belly butter.  It.  Was.  Awesome.  A man will never know confidence until he has a long round shaft shoved in his…gut.  Seriously!  I felt like every five-footer I stood over was going in; anything within 10 feet I felt had a good chance.
  2. Barrack Obama – in 2009, Barrack Obama became the first African American president. A true historical step for the United States of America.  The irony in all this, Donald Trump also became president during Tiger’s major drought.  What a country we live in.
  3. Arnold Palmer passed away – In 2016, Arnold Palmer passed away at the age of 87. I was a big fan of the King.  Not only was he a great golfer (7-time major winner and 95 professional wins worldwide), he oozed cool.  The guy did a photo shoot with Kate Upton in his 80s!  One other noteworthy death – the weirdo better known as Michael Jackson (2009).
  4. Uber – yes, the last time Tiger Woods won a major, you had to find a ride in a yellow car called a taxi. It’s hard to believe we used to sand on the sides of the streets in major cities and wave our hands at yellow cars to get rides.  Uber launched in 2009.  Fast forward to 2019 and, outside of major cities, cabs have kind of gone the way of the dodo bird.
  5. Netflix – If you look it up, Netflix did start before 2008. In fact, they actually launched their streaming service in 2007.  However, it’s fair to assume if you were watching a movie in 2008, it was probably on a DVD.  Now, you can get a movie whenever you want off the world wide web.  Ain’t technology the best!

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
