Kreyling Korner – Week #16 – 08-07-14

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

Week 16 - MOW

This week’s MOW is pretty obvious as the two best players in the league square off – Mike “Big Donkey” Harris vs. Danielle “Still Needs a Nickname” Lickert. Both have the lowest handicaps in the league at 5. They met for the first time ever earlier this year with Mike coming out victorious 6-4.

The play from these two has only gotten stronger as the year progressed. These two are hitting the ball great right now and I predict both shoot close to even par tonight (gross).   Aside from the impressive golf, the team storylines also make this match-up interesting. Harris is in the running for his 7th GCCGL championship and Danielle’s team was eliminated pretty much after the first week. Has the poor early season performance stopped the Balls and Dolls? Absolutely not – the leagues bottom dwellers have embraced the role of spoiler and have won as a team 3 out of the last 4 weeks.

The Glossy prediction – Danielle wins tonight in a close one 5.5 to 4.5. But all is not lost as substitutes again bail out team Morning Wood (can someone say segue?)….

THE KREYLING KORNER

Week 16 - KK

“You know what makes me sick?” Some of the members of this golf league may not know where that line comes from, or who it was said by. For those of you who don’t know – this saying was the tag line of fictional radio personality Earl Pitts (played by Gary Burbank). Earl had the stereotypical persona of a southern gentlemen (aka a redneck) and he would use this line before he went on a rant about a particular topic or circumstance. I like this saying…and I’m going to use it in this week’s Kreyling Korner.

You know what makes me sick…the fact that the GCCGL may be won by a team with a terrible attendance record. Here are some stats:

First Place Team: Morning Wood – 76.7% attendance (third worst in the league), actual team points (excluding team events) = 214, sub points = 72.5

Second Place Team: Schmuck Dynasty – 75% attendance (second worst in the league) actual team points (excluding team events) = 199, sub points = 71.0.

Now – I want to make sure one point is crystal clear, none of these teams are doing anything against the rules. The respective team captains and members have done an excellent job filling voids left by various team members’ absences.

However, I would like to point out this league is starting to morph into a “league of subs” versus a “league of their own.” The age old draft rule used to be – fill your team with league members that have high attendance percentage. Now, attendance does not matter as long as you have the ability to lock down outstanding subs on a weekly basis.

I leave you with one more set of stats. Subs are accounting for 23% of both Morning Wood’s and Schmuck Dynasty’s point totals. Over the last 10 years, on average subs accounted for 20% of a team’s total points; over the last 5 years, on average subs accounted for 19% of a team’s total points. With cash prizes for the first, second and third place teams…I wonder if any of the teams that relied so heavily on subs will give them a cut?
