Kreyling Korner – Week 1 – 04-19-18

The 2018 GCCGL season is back! I don’t know about you guys, but this winter feels like it has lasted forever. Cloudy and 50 degrees today isn’t exactly the best golf weather, but we will be swinging clubs. It seems like forever ago since the Young Guns took the lead in week 5 of the 2017 season and never looked back. On paper, 2018 looks to be much more exciting. All teams appear evenly matched more than capable of capturing a coveted GCCGL championship trophy. Let’s get it on!

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

Flo-Rida scramble is the traditional week #1 event – so NO MOW for you. Tune in throughout the season as I make feeble attempts of picking the winners in matches for the A/B and C/D groups each week. In my 4 seasons of doing this I still haven’t put together a record greater than .500. Let’s see if 2018 is any better, or more importantly, if the MOW jinx is real!

THE KREYLING KORNER

Let’s ease into the 2018 season with a topic that might get everyone talking on the first tee tonight. Golf Pet Peeves! This list could be extremely long, but I’ll keep it to 3.

Pet Peeve #1 – wearing your golf glove to putt; wearing a colored golf glove.
Ok, I kind of wrapped two pet peeves into one here – bear with me. I don’t know why, but I find it annoying when people keep their golf gloves on to putt. Admittedly, it shouldn’t matter in the least. I think it comes down to a term I’ve mentioned in the posts in the past – “tour sauce.” All the pros take their gloves off when they putt and place them in their back pocket. So, naturally, all amateurs should take their glove off and have fingers hanging out their back pocket when they putt – IT JUST LOOKS COOL.

All that being said, I have to completely throw out this pet peeve for one reason and one reason alone. Jack Nicklaus wore a glove while he putted. In fact, he was asked while he wore a glove while putting and his response “I don’t want to take my glove off 18 times a round.”

If it’s good enough for the Golden Bear, it’s good enough for me. But you know one thing Jack didn’t do, he never wore a colored glove. Golf gloves are white – plain and simple. This topic is not debatable!

Pet Peeve #2 – The “Do you think I can hit” guy
Everyone knows this person! And yes, we have a few of them in the league. Congratulations buddy, you just hit your drive as hard as you possibly can. It went 200 yards and you have 275 to the green on a par 5. Yup, you better wait for the green to clear before you hit your second shot, you definitely have a chance at getting home in 2!

Pet Peeve #3 – People who hunt….and hunt….and hunt for golf balls
I get it – looking for golf balls sucks. Especially when you feel like you’ve hit a good shot (or in the case of the GCCGL a shot that’s not terrible) and you cannot find it. But COME ON – how long are you going to look for your ball in the woods? Seriously – the golf ball industry is huge…and they have sales all year long. Or – and I’m just thinking outside the box here – maybe you could use the 5 in your pocket that you found looking for your Maxfli Noodle for the last 10 MINUTES!

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
