Kreyling Korner – Week #14 – 07/25/19
THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK
Week 13 recap – Capitan Hairy with a W; I’m not a Crook takes an L. Let’s talk about Nixon for a second – dude shoots gross 35 (even par) for a net 29 and gets 3 points?!?!?! That’s the worst luck I’ve seen in my 9 years in this league and definitely puts him in the running for unluckiest golfer in the GCCGL. Let’s get to week 14 – overall record stands at 5-7.
A/B Group – Joe “Boot Boy” Eiser vs. Brian “The Senator” Roddy – This match might not seem as obvious if you reviewed Cupcake’s head to head results. Goldie is 8-4 over Roller lifetime, but they were the MOW in week 3 so they’re out. Duer is 5-2 over Nill, but Jason’s on my team so they’re out. Subs aren’t people… That brings us to Joe and Roddy. I was a little shocked when I saw they’ve only played each other twice and both to a draw. Unfortunately, it seems as though both these guys are playing for individual glory for 2019. Boot Boy’s team, Gout My Fairway, is in 4th place, 34 points out of first place. The Senator’s team, Bermuda Knights, is in 5th place, 51 points out of first place. Individually however, Eiser is killing it. He has an overall record of 6-1-3, in first place on the money leaderboard, in second place for total points on the season, and tied for second in winning percentage. Roddy…well, he’s a lot of fun to play with. His season has been a little rougher with an overall record of 2-5-1. Can he get hot in week 14 and take down one of the best performers of the 2019 season?
GLOSSY PREDICTION – I’m under .500 on the MOW overall, and I’d really like to hit that mark this season. With no strokes being awarded, I’m not going to pick against the hot hand. Boot Boy wins 6.5-3.5.
C/D Group – Andy “Han Solo” Crowe vs. Matt “The Politician” Bedell – One of my favorite things about the GCCGL is putting Crowe in the MOW. The minute he reads it his palms start to sweat, he mutters non-sensical gibberish, and he can be spotted in the halls of Prysmian (still weird to call it that) practicing his swing. This week he takes on the Politician. Crowe is a teammate of Roddy’s and, as stated earlier, their chance for a championship in 2019 pretty much set sail in the first half of the season. Bedell on the other hand is on Not So Perfect Attendance and they have made a pretty nice comeback since the start of the year. They currently sit in third place and are within striking distance of leaders (23.5 points). Individually, each of these guys seasons has not had their strongest showing, Bedell sits at 2-3-2 and Crowe is at 2-5. It’s week 14 and with 6 weeks of match play left, each of these gentlemen have a chance to make 2019 a winning season.
GLOSSY PREDICTION – Crowe, you really are one of my favorite people to play golf with in this league. And you are getting 3 strokes tonight. I just cannot get past your record the past two and half years in the league. The heart says yes, but the brain says no. The Politician wins 6-4.

TRENDING UP
Pioneer Front 9
The Pioneer Front 9 in mid-season of the GCCGL is always a treat and week #13 was no exception. Out of the 19 golfers who participated in week #13, 17 of them had net scores under par and only 2 golfers were over par. I know it’s an easy 9 holes, but that kind of scoring is very impressive. What’s even more impressive is the low net winners of last week. Goldie with a net 26 and Bachmann with a net 28. Anytime someone shoots anything in the net 20s is impressive, but net -9 and -7, respectively, well that’s just remarkable.
D Players
Hear me out on this. I don’t know why this caught my eye this week, but I was looking at Cupcake’s scoring spreadsheet and noticed how much total money the B group has made so far this year ($140). It got me thinking – I wonder which group of players makes the most money on a yearly basis. I would think the A group generally makes the most, but still figured I could be surprised. I went back and did the math. On average from 2011 through 2018 the groups win the following amounts of money:
A Players – $251
B Players – $211
C Players – $219
D Players – $242
Keep in mind the dollar totals excluded winning from subs because, say it with me, “subs are not real people.” As I suspected, the A group makes the most money on average. But good on you D players for coming in number 2. It’s really not even a contest with the B and C groups!
TRENDING DOWN
Jeff “Captain Hairy” Capannari
I know what you are thinking, how can a guy that is number 1 in points and tied for second in winning percentage be trending down. Simple, he’s whining. I am going to do my best and get the facts as close as I can on this because I don’t feel like going back and re-reading my emails. In one of the weeks back, Jason put a score down in the spreadsheets that was wrong. The scorecard was turned in and had awful handwriting. Jason mistakenly wrote a score down wrong and it ended up in Cap getting a tie versus a win. Cap complained, and Jason said something along the lines of – I get it, it’s wrong, but I’ve already updated everything in all the systems so I’m not going back and making changes now. If that point changes anything in the standings or the overall individual awards I’ll go back and make an adjustment. Seems like a reasonable response.
Now, we all know Jason probably didn’t say it quite as politically as I just said. In fact I think I remember him finding a rule from the website about verifying cards with your partner before turning them in, blowing it up in huge font, highlighting stuff in yellow (which for Jason is so hard to do because…well you know…color blind) and sent it back to Cap. In Jason’s defense, my six-year-old daughter writes better than most of the crap on the scorecards each week. I’ve had to enter the scores before and it does kind of suck trying to make heads and tails of it all. It’s actually kind of amazing we don’t have more scoring discrepancies really. George had to try to do it one time this past season and he sent an email claiming Jason was the anti-christ or something like that. Don’t get me started on George either – he was complaining about subs last week, skipped a blog post, and refuses to get new material. He was THIS close to trending down this week, but I figured he has had a rough week at work so I let it slide.
Anyway, to finish this up because it’s getting long, Captain Hairy will not stop whining about this scoring error. I gave him a shout-out in last weeks MOW saying he has an impressive record at 6-4. What does he do, takes the opportunity to email me and say the following:
“A couple of things to note, I actually have 7 wins (although the website does inaccurately state 6) which would also positively adjust my win percentage.”
Did you miss Cupcakes email saying he’d change it if made a difference? You just want the recognition? Here it is – members of the GCCGL, Captain Hairy actually has 8 wins this season and should be even higher in the win percentage and further in the lead for the points leader!!!! There is your recognition Homie. 6 weeks of match play left…don’t screw it up.
Lip Gloss’ Ability to Just Say No
This is one of my longer posts this year, but I have a lot on my mind…deal with it. Last week, most of you saw that my favorite driver of all time was snapped in half due to what I can only characterize as an unfortunate golf cart accident. Most of you know those details so let’s skip to the part where I went to get it fixed this weekend. Here is the thing about fixing shafts anymore – when it comes to the modern technology in drivers, all the shafts are all adjustable and you can’t just buy them off a rack. I went to my favorite golf store on the planet, the Golf Exchange in Florence, KY, and after explaining the story to all the guys working there (they all still thought I threw it) they were kind enough to inform me that they would have to contact Calloway on Monday and special order the shaft. At a minimum, they estimated $250 to $300. Ok – just stop thinking it – I know they said that so I would look for a new driver. Maybe replacing the broken shaft was that much money, maybe it wasn’t? Point is – I cannot tell myself NO when I walk into that store. After an hour driver fitting and spending a lot more money than the $250 t0 $300 mentioned above, I’m the new owner of the Ping G410 driver… Welp, there goes my season.
Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
