KREYLING KORNER – WEEK #14 – 07-23-15

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

Week 14 - MOW

Welcome to week 14 my friends.  You want some MOW?  You got some MOW…

A/B Group – Joe “Boot Boy” Eiser vs. Danielle “Golf Witch” Lickert.  Nothing too exciting from these two from a historical perspective – they have met twice and the record stands at 1-1.  But, what I do like about this match is the Danielle stands directly in front of Joe’s shot at history.    I’ve checked with our commissioner’s office statistician and in the 20 years of the GCCGL, only two people have been the points leader two years in a row.  Who are those two people you might ask?  Mike “Big Donkey” Harris in 2011 and 2010 and…wait for it… Oliver Livermore in 2006 and 2007.   Joe currently sits at number two in total points for the 2015 season, just 3.5 points behind George Almeida.  There is still plenty of time for Joe to make up the gap.  A big hurdle between him and history is the Golf Witch.  I think Danielle had her struggles early in the season but has played some decent golf of late (when she decides to actually play).  I think this one is close.  Even though Joe gets 3 strokes, I don’t think that is enough to overtake the Witch’s “forward” tee advantage on the front of Pioneer.  Glossy Prediction – Danielle wins 5.5 – 4.5.

C/D Group – Jason “Cupcake” Nill vs. Allen “Cletus” Bloomhuff.  Serious question – since Allen’s nickname is also his real middle name, do we need parentheses around the Cletus? #thingsthatmakeyougohmmm

It’s not every week two legends of the GCCGL square off.  However, the stars have aligned in week 14 and we are treated to a show-down for the ages.    Aside from both men being members of the inaugural GCCGL Hall of Fame class, they have matched up 15 times.  Their first meeting was in 2001 and amazingly enough they have only tied once.  Cletus does hold the advantage in the series as the total record stands at 8-6-1.  So what does this all mean for the current week – hell I don’t know?  At times this season, both men have shown signs of brilliance…at others, not so much.  If I have to call it, I’m going with Cupcake 6.5 – 3.5.  I have nothing to go on here except that Cletus lost to Tucker a couple weeks back and that was my STONE COLD PICK OF THE YEAR.  Yep Cletus – you are still dead to me.

THE KREYLING KORNER

Week 14 - KK

Golf etiquette – we have all heard about it and we all agree the GCCGL has minimal to none.  Replace your divots, fix ball marks, do not walk in the line of a playing partner, blah blah blah.

I recently read an article Arnold Palmer wrote for Golf Digest discussing his tips for good golf etiquette.  What I found interesting is the tips were significantly different than those typically heard as good golf etiquette.  I thought for Kreyling Korner we would examine a few of Arnie’s tips and see if they hold true in the GCCGL.

  1. Don’t be the slowest player. Two years ago – I might have argued there were SEVERAL members who violated this rule (you know who you are). But honestly – pace of play has been much improved in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.  The only time we finish late is if the clubhouse decides to send a foursome out directly in front of us.

  1. Always look your best. The Kreyling Korner was born because of fashion tips.  And for the most part, the league looks well put together.  Sure people violate some fashion tips on a weekly basis (cargo shorts, high socks, jean shorts) but generally most people look presentable.

  1. Turn off the cell phone. I have to admit one of my biggest pet peeves on a golf course is someone who constantly checks their cell phone.  In general, most GCCGL members keep their phones in the bag once they tee off.  There are violators – but for the most part I think we live up to this etiquette tip.

  1. Keep your temper under control. I’m on the fence on this one.  For the most part people realize this is just a game (and beer drinking league).  However, club throws are not uncommon…and if Pete’s golf bag could speak????  You can’t let a few bad apples ruin the bunch…right?  All-in-all, I’d say the GCCGL passes this rule as well.

  1. Lend a hand when you can. The GCCGL knocks this one out of the park.  Every week playing partners pick up clubs left on the greens, fix ball marks on greens other than their own (if he or she actually fixes a ball mark), move carts for other members if left out of position.  It’s a friendly group and I think we would make Arnie proud on this one.

So – after evaluating Arnold Palmer’s five tips above, could we conclude the GCCGL holds golf etiquette to the highest standard?  Hell no – hang out on the first tee and you will understand why.

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
