July 26, 2012 Update

[dc]S[/dc]ome how, some way, despite thunder, lightning, wind and rain all around us, we were able to finish the round relatively dry. Overall, it seems like everyone enjoyed the first annual GCCGL Stableford Scramble. The opinion from the commissioner’s office was that it felt like a lot of work for nothin’. Although the potential was there for teams to have a make or break week and either gain or lose some ground in the standings, it really didn’t happen. After all was said and done, 5 of the 6 teams finished within 2 points of each other. Not to worry though, the commissioner’s office is already working on tweaking the point system for next year’s Stableford event to hopefully increase the potential for some movement in the standings.

As stated earlier, the conditions were less than ideal and essentially took away a few of the eagle opportunities that may have been available otherwise. However there was one eagle that was made on hole #6 by team AMDB. Co-commissioner Cupcake drove the green and Number 2 sunk the putt. Nice! The Golf Angel was on fire this week! We used a few of her drives this week. There was also one moment on hole #8 when we decided to use Couzin’ Joe’s drive that landed in the sand trap in front of of the green. As GA addressed her ball, Snoodles and CJ stops GA and tries to talk her into possibly putting the ball out of the trap instead of using her sand wedge. She tried to tell them that she has no problem using the wedge out of the sand but they persist. She almost gives in and starts walking to her bag when I decide to open my trap and ask her what she wants to do. She states she wants to hit the SW and we all agree to go for it. She takes a perfect swing and lands it within 8 feet of the hole! CJ then sinks the putt for birdie! We pick up the Golf Angel, carry her to the next hole all the while chanting Golf Angel! Golf Angel!……..ok, maybe we didn’t do that but we could have.

You may have noticed that for the first time in recent memory, there were several folks riding carts this week on the shortest nine holes you’ll ever play. Of course the heat and rain may have had something to do with it. I bring this up because throughout the round, in between claps of thunder, there was this freakish high pitch, squealing sound. We couldn’t tell where it was coming from but it soon became clear that it was the undeniable sounds of a little golf cart screaming for help while carting around the combination of Big Donkey and Syndrome. We can’t confirm this but someone stated they saw the cart “sweating” while struggling up hole #4. Big Donkey even admitted the cart strained even when it was going down hill. What do you expect? That’s what you get when you stuff 1/4 ton of bacon cheese burgers and beer into a 4 x 8 electric powered vehicle. I have to admit, watching those two squeeze into that cart was like watching Chris Farley ease into an airline window seat in coach. It was disturbing yet fascinating! I know….I know….this has nothing to do with golf but it was a very quiet week and I’m doing the best I can filling this blog up with fluff.

The tight squeeze didn’t seem to affect their team’s game, Menace to Sobriety finished with 14 points along with AMDB. Unfortunately they didn’t pick up any points on first place and still remain 53.5 points away from the prize. They did pick up some ground on the Big Tebowski’s and are only 11.25 points from climbing out of the cellar! The Big Tebowski’s managed only 10 points this week. NQ8! and UMass Debate Team wound up with a respectable 13 points while Balls of Fury finished with 12 points.

The winner of the CTP on hole #5 was Tom Tucker (A/B) who subbed for Ed Petryk. No one from the (C/D) group hit the green. So sad. We’ll carry that prize money over to the final scramble.

We are back to match play this week and stay on the front side of Pioneer. We added a new Team Stroke Analysis statistic. Check it out. Hope to see you all on the course and as always, hit ’em straight!
