April 26, 2012 Update

[dc]T[/dc]he 2012 GCCGL season is on the way. It was an extraordinary blustery day which started off warm and comfortable but turned windy and cold mid-way through the round. Nonetheless, it was a successful opener even though the last few teams finshed in the dark. We had perfect attendance last night with 23 of 24 members showing up and one lone substitute, Bill Nixon. Great turnout everyone!

As stated, the conditions were tough and the scores reflected that. Cletus did a stand up job getting everyone on the tee and we actually teed off early and got two teams off before our regulary scheduled tee time of 5:32pm! That is unheard of. Even with the early start, play slowed to a crawl because of the group ahead of us hence the reason we fnished in the dark. As much as we want to extend the season for as many weeks as possible, it just might make more sense to go back to a 16 week season and start on the first Thursday in May. We’ll see.

It was a quiet night really, not much to blog about. It started with Golf Angel changing clothes in her car while a group of old  retired buddies set up a mobile web cam using the battery to Clarenece’s heart difibulator to catch a glimpse. They almost had it set up and the feed downloaded when the battery died……..along with Clarence. At least he went with a smile on his face.

T.W.I.G. (This week in Golf)
Newcomer Zeke Knechtges showed up in style wearing some classic checkered blue and white golf pants. I heard his teamate Don Moore mistakenly took Zeke for the flag when chipping up on a hole. Honest mistake. Not to be undone, Chris “Number 2” Meyer showed up in a crazy but strangely amuzing outfit all the way from the hat to the socks! This one will go down as one of the best and bravest getups we’ve seen yet.  Click HERE to see the photo. I don’t know about anyone else but I hope I haven’t seen the end of those ensembles! Gotta love the enthusiasm!

Big Ed Petryk did his best impression of a cork screw on the #18 tee as he uncoiled his drive then spun around and fell completely on his butt. His team was +1 at the time and he was going for the green which is totally reachable for him if he gets it all. It went straight though but the team wound up using The Politician’s ball instead. FYI, for all your newcomers, The Politician is Matt Bedell. Many of the members have little nicknames that have evolved over the years. Let me know if you have a preferred nickname for yourself. If not, that is OK, it will only be a matter of time before the league tags you with one whether you like or or not.

Big Donkey (Mike Harris) was sick, really sick. He had no business showing up for work never mind playing golf. But he wasn’t about to leave his team stranded and toughed it out. His team, Menace to Sobriety, didn’t fare too well finishing +1 tied for 3rd. This prompted the rumor mill to begin swirling. Already whispers have begun indicating unhappiness with the level of play from their A player last night and the possibility of unloading Harris for Dominik and 5 boxes of defective CAT5 cable and renaming their team to The Quadrupal D’s. Of course this is all heresay and who knows maybe I’m making it up. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Beginning the season with a Florida scramble seems to have been a bit hit! Looks like a new GCCGL tradition has begun! The winners of the Florida Scramble were UMass Debate Team. They were helped by sub Bill Nixon who subbed for Eiser. They finished with a -2. That is probably the worst winning score in GCCGL scramble history. Again, the conditions and the Florida scramble format had a lot to do with it. Finishing second were AMDB and Never Question and 8! with a final score of -1. There were a lot of bogeys on the course last night. Rounding up the bottom three were Balls of Fury and Menace to Sobriety. They finished tied for third with a +1 while The Big Tebowski’s own the distinction of finishing in last place with a +2.

Other News
It looks like is was a unanimous YES regarding the final week of the GCCGL season 18 hole best-ball scramble extravaganza at the end of the year. We will schedule this as soon as possible, most likley on August 18th. This will be a first for the GCCGL. There is a lot of upside to finishing the season on a Saturday with 18 holes of golf. One, it’s just plain fun. Two, we don’t have to worry about daylight. And three, it leaves a lot of time for refreshments and socializing at the end of the round. I can’t see a downside can you?

I know many of you have probably seen this but I thought it was so funny it deserved some ink. This week’s web feature is The 18 Most Annoying Golf Partners. Do you know any of these people? Are YOU any of these golfers? Every golf league in the universe has a few of these guys in their leagues. It’s what makes things interesting and entertaining. I can’t help but go through this list and laugh especially when we all have played with someone who might share some of these characteristics. Check out some of the comments, some of them are funny. It’s all in good fun. If you can’t laugh at yourself then who can you laugh at?………Cletus?

The schedule has been set for the rest of the season. Details regarding the new Stableford non-match play event will be ironed out by next week. Also, the final 18 hole best-ball scramble details will also be resolved within the next couple of weeks.

The winners of the Closest-to-the-Pin were Big Ed Petryk (A/B) and Allen Cletus Bloomhuff (C/D). Congratulations guys. That was no easy task landing a ball on the green with the wind blowing the way it was. Nice job. We begin match play next week on the front nine of the Willows course. Please get a sub if you can’t make it, we have a ton of subs who want to play this season. We get an additional 7 minutes of daylight next Thursday. I hope that’s enough. Hope to see you on the course. Good luck and as always, hit ’em straight!
