2023 – Week 16

We are in the stretch run now folks. Four weeks left! Two scrambles and two match play. We had 4 NO SHOWS NO SUBS this week. This can only mean one of three things:

  1. It’s too hot for everyone
  2. People are losing interest really fast
  3. People are hedging their bet on their CARD doing better than a sub

If you’re a substitute in the GCCGL, you should be insulted! We’ve gone through stretches like this in the past where subs are treated like sub-human species as blogged about in a July 9, 2017 post, The Trade. Subs are people too! This sparked this week’s GCCGL topic, Subs vs The CARD.

You are all probably wondering, “How did the four NO SHOWS NO SUBS do this week?” First of all, the folks who decided to go with their CARDS this week were Crowe, Rayburn, Duer and Wells. All four CARDS lost (the best they can do is tie as you all know). But the average point total was 4.38. That’s pretty damn good for doing nothing! Well, I shouldn’t say they all were doing nothing. Who knows what Crowe and Wells were doing but we know that Rayburn and Duer were sweating their asses off in Vegas.

Look at those temperatures. Eight straight days over 100°! I know, I know but it’s a dry heat. Bullshit. Don’t let the Vegas Boys tell you any different, they’re melting. I mean, it’s 92° at 10PM! There is a reason why the casinos flocked to Vegas, there’s nowhere to hide but the airconditioned casinos! Throw in a couple of free drinks and a buffet, it’s a recipe for $UCCESS! Cha-CHING! As a matter of fact, we have proof that the heat has gotten to these knuckleheads, especially Palamino Nick who was found stumbling into the tattoo parlor.

But I’m getting off topic, Subs vs The CARD. So, we went back into the GCCGL archives and dug up some statistics for you.

Over the last 3 years (2021-2023), when we changed to the World Handicap System, the average score against the CARD is 5.63 pts. Compare that to the prior 10 years (2001 – 2020), the average score against the CARD was 6.20 pts. That means since we’ve instituted the World Handicap System into the GCCGL, we’ve lost almost 1 whole point playing against the CARD. The bottom line that over the last 3 years, the CARD has become more and more difficult to beat. Incredible. Where else will you get this kind of detailed analysis? Do you think the Durobag Golf League provides this kind of exhilarating breakdown? Do you think the Knights of Columbus Golf League stimulates their members’ minds with titillating and provocative content provided to you each and every week by Kreyling Korner and GCCGL posts? All this for $60/yr? Think again.

As usual, this and other topics will be at the forefront at the 2024 GCCGL Winter meetings. The GCCGL Commissioner’s office is committed to churning out the best damn golf league entertainment year after year like we’ve been doing for 28 years. This is a good time to remind subs that if you want to play full-time next year, please let me know so that we can add you to the waiting list. And for those full-time members who don’t think they can maintain their 69% attendance rate and would rather sub, that’s OK too. Just let us know.

In other news, I guess the latest Kreying Korner post worked! Play was definitely faster, even on the hardest course. Great job! Toby ran out of balls by the 3rd hole. Both Winkler and I had to reach deep into our bags to “lend” him some balls. It’s the Stableford Scramble this week. Last season, the Stableford was significant in changing the trajectory of the GCCGL championship race. There was a 24-point difference between first and last place after the scramble. That’s huge! Granted, there was some controversy that quite honestly, I’ve forgotten about but nonetheless, this could be a huge “moving” week. Below are the 2022 results of the Stableford Scramble.

The big winners this week were Meat-Balls who beat the third-place place Dude Where’s My par? (23-17). They were led by Mike “Meat” Morell, who notched 6.5 points. Go Putt Yourself and Courtesty Tap-Ins both won their team matches (22 – 18). They were led by Ollie and Leininger who both nabbed 7 points each. The low net winners were Kreyling (A/B) with a low net 34 and Winkler (C/D) with a low net 35. Congratulations to the winners! It is the Stableford Scramble this week. If you can’t make it, PLEASE get a sub within 3 stokes of your HC. We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ’em straight!
