May 3, 2012 Update

[dc]A[/dc] near picture perfect day, perfect attendance (24 of 24 members), an improved good pace of play all added up to a fine week #2 in the GCCGL. All six groups finished with enough daylight even after we tee’d off a little behind schedule because of the league in front of us. Another great job by Cletus getting the order set and getting everyone tee’d off on time.

It was another quiet week. There were some interesting matches this week. Cletus wound up edging Cupcake on the last hole (5.5 – 4.5). Snoodles out-playing Big Donkey by scoring a 39! Heck of a round! Duer trying to psyche out Goldie by wearing an all NY Yankee ensemble. It didn’t work, Goldie wound up winning the match (5.5 -4.5). I think if he really wanted to get in Goldie’s head, he should have worn a NY Mets hat with a Mookie Wilson shirt to remind Goldie of that infamous BoSox collapse in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. And finally Lonneman giving up 10 strokes to Golf Angel and squeaking out a (6 – 4) victory.

It’s early in the season, very early but after two weeks the standings are shaping up as a league of the “have’s” and “have not’s”. The top 3 teams who finished in top three in the scramble last week also had good successful weeks in week 2 and have opened up a bit of a disparity between the top three teams and the bottom three teams. There are many explanations for this including holding a scramble on opening week. One thing is for sure this season, with 6 teams there will most likely be some very interesting matchups every week.

Cletus thought it would be funny to play a prank on me this week, and he was right. I was engrossed on the practice greens before the round, when Cletus decided he’d unscrew the wheels to my pull cart so that they laid kind of flat to make it look like my pull cart was broken. Then, he had the foresight to capture the moment by taking a string a pictures. I’ll admit, when I first got to my cart, I thought it was broken (it wouldn’t have been the first time my cart had broken) but then when I saw that the wheel was actually unscrewed, I knew Cletus had to be close. Check out the sequence, it’s pretty funny. I’ll get you for this Cletus.

Other News
An alternative idea came up last week that sounded interesting. Instead of having a end of season 18 hole Scramble on a Saturday for all the GCCGL members, instead why not open it up to ALL GCCGL participants including subs and have a huge event at Elk’s Run. It would not count for the GCCGL standings. We would still hold it on August 18th. What do you think?

The post-round get together’s at BW’s are proving to be a virtual fountain of information. The nuggets that get tossed around over wings and cold ones are both funny and illuminating. I’ve learned so much in such a short period of time. For example, I learned a sure-fire way to break out of a golfing slump, romance is in the air, anger management is effective, and flower tatoos are very cool,  Internet dating can be hazardous to your wallet, the art of being a good wing-man, the consequences of drinking responsibly, stress-relief methods and everything I ever needed to know about elevator buttons. It’s difficult, if not impossible, to elaborate in this blog. I guess you just had to be there. Needless to say it’s been very entertaining and educational.

T.W.I.G
The big winners this week were NQ8! They beat up on Menace to Sobriety (25.5 – 14.5). Ouch! They were led by Commish who somehow managed to steal 8 points. They have moved into first place in front of UMass Debate Team who tied with the Big Tebowski’s (20 – 20). Great team match. They were led by Joe Carrier (we need a nick name here) who grabbed 8.5 points. AMDB crushed Balls of Fury (24 – 16) with the help of their team captain, Ollie, who took 8 points in his victory.

The winners of the low net were Danny Roller (A/B) with a net score of 30! He broke 40 this week shooting 3 over par against the Big Donkey. Nice round! The winners for the C/D group were Chops and Carrier with a low net of 34. Nice rounds as well. We continue on the front side of the Willows next week. We should be past the daylight issue now. As for all the negative Nellies in the last group who were complaining how they’d never finish play, blah, blah, blah…. I don’t want to say I told you so therefore I won’t. But I will tell you what my wife already knows and has been hearing for the last 24 years (21 of them married), “I’m always right!” Good luck and as always hit’ em straight!
