Kreyling Korner – Week 7 – 05-31-18

We start the Week 7 MOW with a very interesting question – in week 5, I picked Joel Miller against Mike Tucker.  Tucker was a no show, so Miller played the card.  Miller went on to actually tie the card.  A tie against the card has to count as a loss for me….right?  MOW Jinx is real and I screwed my teammate.  Overall MOW record is 1-7.  Might be the worst start of all time!

THE LIP-SMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

A/B Group – Adam “Marge” Schott vs. Danny “Snoodles” Roller –  So far in 2018 Danny is having the better season with a 3-1 record and 24.5 points; Schott is off to 1-2 and has 15.0 points.  Historically, Schott owns a slight edge at 2-1.  The real question about Schott’s season is would he have more wins if his golf clubs hadn’t been stolen.  I’ve talked with Marge a lot about this situation over the last couple weeks and while the pain of losing your sticks sounds awful, they were fully covered under insurance.  That means he was able to have a custom club fitting for a brand-new set of clubs…putter to driver.  I’m not sure how many of you guys have been fitted for new clubs before, but it really is a fun process.  Being fitted for an entire bag of clubs must be heaven.  Back to the match – at that time I was writing this blog post, Schott’s clubs have not yet been delivered.  Obviously, this will factor in on my decision of who to pick…right?  Of course not, the MOW jinx is real, and Roller’s team is in first place.  GLOSSY PREDICTION – Roller wins 5.5-4.5.

C/D Group –  Mike “Swiper” Ethridge vs. John “Syndrome” Rayburn – another week and another D player giving a whole hell of a lot more strokes than they are used to.  League favorite Syndrome matches up against Mike Ethridge in week 7.  Rayburn’s 2018 is off to a rough start at 1-3 and 16.5 points; Ethridge is doing pretty good for a rookie with a 2-1 record and 19.5 points.   I can’t help it – it cracks me up to see that Rayburn will be giving 10 strokes on the front of Pioneer.  The only thing Syndrome has working for him is the mind games.  This is the first times these two have played and who knows if Rayburn can shake Swiper with discussions of breakfast foods…or parenting advice….or, well you get the picture.  As good as Syndrome is getting people to think about anything besides there golf game, I just don’t see how Ethridge does not take advantage of 10 strokes and the easiest of the GCCGL’s course rotation.  GLOSSY PREDICTION – Ethridge wins 6-4.

THE KREYLING KORNER

I’m going to introduce another new blog idea I came up with this offseason.  In any given week, I’m going to give you 3 things to know.  Mostly they will be golf related, but some won’t be.  Let’s get to it – here are three things to know in Week #7

Thing 1 – The Memorial Golf Tournament

You may have noticed that this week’s tee times and blog post are out much earlier than usual.  That’s because May 31, 2018 commences the first round of the 2018 Memorial Golf tournament.  Each year Cupcake and I are fortunate enough to make the trip to Dublin, OH to watch the world’s best compete for a championship at Jack’s tournament.  If you have never visited Muirfield Village I highly suggest you do so.  The course in immaculate and it really is a wonderful place to watch a golf tournament.   A couple quick facts about the Memorial:

  • The tournament was established in 1976
  • The tournament record score was pasted by Tome Lehman in 19994 at -20
  • Six men have multiple Memorial Tournament wins: Tiger Woods has won 5 times and Kenny Perry 3 times – obviously there are 4 people with 2 wins. I was surprised by the Kenny Perry stat.

Thing 2 – FC Cincinnati to the MLS

Like I said, some things to talk about won’t be about golf.  Unless you live under a rock, you couldn’t help but notice that every social media and news outlet in the Cincinnati area was discussing FC Cincinnati’s expansion bid to the MLS in 2019.  Now I know there are probably a bunch of people still claiming soccer sucks and saying why would I ever go watch a soccer game.  Well if for not other reason they might be winners.  With the Reds in about year 4 of a rebuild (and they look worse than ever) and the Bengals being the Bengals, where do we actually have a chance of winning any kind of championship on a major league level in the immediate future?  Now I might be partial because I played soccer growing up, but if you haven’t had a chance to check out a game at least give it a shot.  The atmosphere is actually really cool and I’m sure the new stadium will be state of the art.

Thing 3 – One Year Since I Started Rolling My Golf Ball

Actually that’s a lie, it’s technically been over a year since I start rolling my golf ball (May 11, 2017).  How do I know this you may ask – I actually have it written down on my board in my office.  I also have my average score and Scratch’s average gross score of all our rounds prior to 5/11/17.  Why did I do this?  To actually see if there is an advantage to rolling your golf ball.  Here is what the stats say:

Kreyling – prior to 5/11/2017 my average gross score was 43; after 5/11/2017 my average gross score was 42.

Turnwald – prior to 5/11/2017 his average gross score was 40; after 5/11/2017 his average gross score was 39.

In one year each of us gained an entire stroke on average to our scores.  That’s not a huge improvement, but it is an improvement none the less.  It will be interesting to see if these scores improve, or get worse, over time.

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
