Kreyling Korner – Week 4 – May 10, 2023

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

2 AND 0!!!  Goldie with a W and El Lipa-Glossa is off to a hot start.  Week 4’s Potluck brings a whole new level of complexity, but let’s have at it!

WEEK 4 MOW – Toby Grainger vs. Danny “Snoodles” Roller

I know, I know – Snoodles was in the MOW last week, but how could he NOT be in the MOW for Potluck.  The best thing about this week is seeing how many strokes A/Bs have to give C/Ds.  Week 4 in the 2023 season has some doozies, for sure: Ethridge vs. Welling – 10 and Goldie vs. Winkler – 14.  But above both of those is Grainger (who needs a nickname) vs Snoodles.  Danny is giving up….wait for it….29 strokes.  29 strokes.  I can’t get my head round this.  That’s 3 strokes on every hole…and 4 strokes on both 10 and 18.  In the history of the GCCGL, only one other time has a match had this much of a stroke differential.  Mike “Big Donkey” Harris had to give Melissa “Golf Angel” Cember 23 strokes.  Cupcake found the results way back in week 9 of 2011, and Harris won 6-4.

GLOSSY PREDICTION – Obviously, since Grainger is a rookie, I have no historical statistics to go on.  What I do know is Toby shot a 71 on the front of Willows in week 3, which resulted in a net score of 40.  The question is, how many shots does the back 9 of the Willows (the hardest 9 holes we play in our league for you rookies) add to an individual’s net score?  Unfortunately, there isn’t an easy way to calculate it.  I do know Danny shoots an average net score of 37.7 on the back of the Willows; his average net score on the front of the willows is 36.5.  Using Danny’s scores an example, that means Tobby will shoot a net of 41.2.  My gut tells me that’s actually a little low, so I’m thinking we add 3 strokes to Tobby’s net for a 43.  Based on this assessment, which I will point out is still using stats and educated guesses, I’m saying Roller overcomes the massive stroke differential.  This one comes down to the last couple holes but Snoodles ekes out a win, 5.5-4.5.

KREYLING KORNER

Kreyling Korner Image

What a blog update by PW this past week.  Not sure about the rest of the league, but it’s starting to feel a bit like the league of old with all this website activity!  I expected a good ripping by George after I posted about his abysmal attendance percentage to start 2023.  However, the one thing I did NOT agree with was the cartoon character he created and said “looked” like me.  I have too used the Bing Image Creator (AI) George mentioned and the picture to the left is what I believe more accurately depicts me as a cartoon golfer.  In fact, this is now the official picture of each Kreyling Korner post.  #handsomedevil

Potluck Stats

Cupcake threw out some interesting stats this week related to Potluck.  I dove into them a little more and here is what I notice.  In the past 12 seasons, the A/B group has a 58% winning percentage versus the C/D group (42%).  Somewhat interesting is the course on where the victories occur.  Out of the past 12 season, the Potluck event has been played on the Pioneer front 9, six times; the A/B group has a winning record over the C/D group 4-2.  The Pioneer Back has hosted the even 1 time with the A/B group winning there as well.  Now here is what I found interesting.  The potluck has been played on the Willows front 9, three times and the C/Ds have a winning record of 2-1; the Willows back has been played twice and the A/Bs and C/Ds split 1-1.  I think we all can agree the Willows is a more difficult course than the Pioneer, and higher handicaps across the league on those 9s supports this.  Higher handicaps obviously mean more strokes for the C/D group.  However, I would have bet that despite the more strokes awarded, the higher difficulty on the course played would have a larger effect on the outcome of the matches.  What we are seeing is the exact opposite – the C/Ds have a better chance on the Willows than on the Pioneer.  It will be interesting to see if this holds true after tonight’s matches on the WB.  #maybeishouldchangemyMOWpick

New Member Spotlight

I’m introducing a new section of the Kreyling Korner this year – the New Member Spotlight.  First up, Jack “Copper Top” Tally.  I had the pleasure of playing with Jack last week and wanted to share just a couple of the highlights from our round and interactions.  First, Jack and I share a common bond – we both graduated from Covington Catholic high school.  When I shared this information with my fellow Colonel, Jack asked “what year did you graduate?” My response of “1999” was followed with, “Oh, that was the year I was born.”  I feel as though my maturity level has remained the same since my junior year at CCH, but to hear Jack mutter these words truly stung.  I kind of know what it feels like to be like Cletus…old.  Anyway, a couple quick hitters about Jack’s golf game:

  • He just started playing golf last year
  • He made a par on 3 after shanking his tee shot dead right, off the fence, and landing just in front of the red tees.
  • He had a stretch on holes 4, 5, 6, and 7 where he scored 8, 5 (on a par 3), 8, 8. I mention this only to point out – he shot a 52 with this stretch of holes.  This is only his second year, so the more he plays, the better he will become.  Jack Tully is the “sleeper” pick of the future.

I leave you with this last tidbit on Copper Top.  On the 9th hole last week we were talking about our games and how we both just weren’t playing well.  Jack said to me, “you know, sometimes I wonder if I didn’t drink if I would play better” …silence for about 10 seconds… “but why would I do that.”  #welcometotheGCCGLcoppertop

90s Rap Song of the Week….and a fact you might not know

Here at Kreyling Korner I occasionally give you guys a “banger” that’s been forgotten about over the years.  Today’s pick – I Gotta Man by Positive K.  Love this song and I forgot about until it randomly showed up on a Spotify play list this week.  Fun fact about this song.  Positive K did both the male and female vocals.  The “female” voice was pitch adjusted with the aid of studio technology! #knowledge

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
