2023 Pre-Season Survey

Good day GCCGL members! We had a brief run of some nice warm weather last week reminding us that golf is just around the corner. I can sense the anticipation starting to bubble up with excitement…… Nope, it was just gas. The 2023 GCCGL season has officially begun! The roster is complete. We have a total of 51 participants at this time (24 full-time members and 27 substitutes). Check out all the 2023 Members! I’d like to welcome the new full-time members. I hope these folks know what they’ve gotten themselves into!

With so many new players this year, the 2023 GCCGL Draft will be very interesting due to all the unknowns, but that’s what keeps things interesting.  We encourage all the newcomers (FT and Subs) to get in as much golf as possible and turn in as many cards as you can to Jason “Cupcake” Nill. The more scores you have in the handicap system, the better off you’ll be.

Last year, we held a LIVE GCCGL draft event for the first time ever at Mac’s Pizza & Pub in Highland Heights, KY (in the Kroger shopping center). It was a blast. We’d like to do this again and are going to shoot for the mid-to-late March time frame. Again, for the new members, we encourage you to take advantage of as many good weather days as possible between now and then so that your handicap is reflective of your skill. It really does make playing in a handicap league much more enjoyable.  This year’s captains are the B-Players. We do not have the official list of B-Players yet, but we will over the next coming weeks. For those of you who are new to the league, we break the league up into 4 flights:

A-Player – this is normally the best player on each team with the lowest handicap. They are a very sensitive bunch but relied upon to deliver in the scrambles which for the most part is where the championship is won or lost. They all have rangefinders and own expensive golf equipment that they can’t afford. They golf pretty much golf every weekend or at least every other weekend during the Spring, Summer and Fall. They hate golfing with the likes of C and D players.

B-Player – this is your wannabe A-Player; they just don’t have the desire to put in the work to get to that next level. They dress the part and line up every putt like they’re playing on the PGA Tour, but they’re less intense than the typical A-Player. They drink the most beer during every round, regardless of the time of day and even mingle with the lowly C and D players every now and then. This group was voted “Most likely to shoot 39 one week and 49 the next“.

C-Player – these guys just don’t give a shit. They love getting strokes week in and week out and have the potential to shoot in the net 20’s. They are not apologetic about it even after they’ve beaten their opponent 9-1 shooting a gross score of 40 while getting strokes. They are just happy to win the low-net money anytime they can. They occasionally splurge on golf equipment, but it really doesn’t help their game.  And for some reason, this group tends to buy more beer than the other groups. Go figure.

D-Player – normally these are your newbies to the game of golf, “rookies” but not always. This player is arguably the key to your team’s success. A good D-Player or one that gets hot at the right time during scrambles, will propel your team and give them an excellent chance to win the coveted GCCGL Championship.  There is a ton of pressure on the D-Player for a couple of GCGL events, but this bunch is normally a fun bunch and work hard to get to the next level (C-level) but rarely do.

I wanted to let all of you know that former GCCGL member, Jeff McNeil, is having another golf tournament. For those of you who have played in his events in the past supporting children’s diabetes, you know that these events are always fun and for a good cause. If you are interested, please go to the McNeil Family Golf Classic and register. The event is on May 5th, 2023.

Also, the GCCGL IT department revised the mobile plugin to hopefully improve your experience on the GCCGL website from your mobile phones. You should now be able to view all links, menus and videos from your mobile device. Finally, we thought we’d start the year off with a survey. The GCCGL Commissioner’s office is nothing if they are not open to their members thoughts and ideas. Therefore, please take a minute to fill out the first anonymous survey of the year on if you had a chance to do remove one GCCGL special event from the 2023 calendar, which one would it be? We are not stating that an event will be removed, but we want to hear your opinions.  Click on the Survey to begin!

We are looking forward to another fun season of golf.  We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ’em straight!
