2022 – Week 10

Montezuma’s Revenge. Other than it quickly becoming one of the most adored GCCGL events, do you know what it means? I know many of the more “mature” GCCGL members know what it stands for, but do the young pups of the league even know?

Montezuma’s Revenge is an informal NOUN pronounced [Mon·te·zu·ma’s re·venge]. The basic definition is diarrhea suffered by travelers, especially visitors to Mexico

The Origin of
Montezuma’s revenge

The colloquial term for any cases of traveler’s diarrhea contracted by tourists visiting Mexico. The name humorously refers to Moctezuma II, the ruler of the Aztec civilization who was defeated and slaughtered by Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conquistador. The white Spaniards would then continue to enslave or obliterate the Aztec people. It is said that whenever a white person has diarrhea while visiting Mexico, he is suffering the wrath of Montezuma’s revenge.

Now that you know a little something about Montezuma’s Revenge, you’ve probably figured out that not only can it wreak havoc on your lower intestine, but it can also disrupt the GCCGL standings in a big way. Just ask The 4 Donkeys of the Apocalypse. They started the day in first place and by the time Montezuma got through with them, they were in 4th place. There were some great shots and there were some “not so great” shots but overall, it seemed to me that most of the members in attendance had a great time. I know I did, even after shooting a double-bogey on the Pink Ball hole.

This is one of my favorite events. By rights, I should HATE this event. I am a D Player after all. This event is a D Player’s worst nightmare between, The Pink Ball hole, The Lump of Coal and the Worst Ball, it’s enough to cause serious phycological damage (if you let it). There were a lot of nerves being tested out there leading to a lot of clenched anuses which ironically pairs perfectly with the whole diarrhea theme. What is it about witnessing someone doing a mad dash to the nearest hole in the ground, hoping and praying they’ll make it before…..well…..you know. It’s funny. It’s happened to most of us at one point in our lives and I don’t remember it being funny when it was happening to me! But it is funny when it happens to someone else.

Look, the Portuguese are very nice, educated, and good-looking people. But, we like bathroom humor. Can’t help it. Farts are funny. A wise man once said to me, “Never trust a man who doesn’t laugh at a fart“. I can’t think of a more profound creed to live by.

The video below exemplifies this silliness of this league and how much fun it truly is. It is easy to forget that sometimes. Of course everyone wants to do well and win the highly coveted GCCGL Championship. Who wouldn’t, winning the GCCGL Championship will change your life. But let us not forget, it is just a golf league. The main goal every Thursday night for 20 weeks in the Spring and Summer should be to have a good time. If you win, then that’s icing on the cake. If you don’t win, then I’m willing to bet at some point during the evening that you smiled, laughed, joked or just plainly de-stressed if even for just a couple of hours. So, whenever you feel like you just need a pick-me-up or if you feel that this league is loosing a little of its luster, turn up the sound and watch the video below.

Just an FYI, I fixed several broken links on the GCCGL website so everything should work from the Mobile and Desktop version. Good luck everyone. We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ’em straight!
