2020 – Week Seventeen

We are finally here! The last week of the 25th anniversary season of the GCCGL! It has been a shortened, crazy, weird season due to the pandemic, but we got through it. I don’t know about you but for me, it helped bring back some normalcy during these unpresented times. Especially earlier in the season.

You know, when you’ve been around the GCCGL for long enough, you’ve pretty much seen everything that can happen on a golf course. Think about some of the things we’ve all witnessed over the past 25 years. Adam “Marge” Schott climbing up a tree to play/retrieve his ball during a Battle Golf match. Or Cletus picking a fight on the golf course with a guy twice his size. How about El Hefe nosediving for pink balls in a scum filled pond. And who can forget Syndrome’s runaway cart when he drove off the cart path on Willows #9 and careened down the hill. I still laugh out loud every time I think about this moment. And we’re just scratching the surface. At any rate, just when you think you’ve seen everything, Syndrome goes and whips his 60 degree wedge over the fence, over Independence Station Road and into the woods on Pioneer #7. Unfortunately, this happened unexpectedly and out of frustration after Syndrome had duffed what seemed like his 10th chip of the night so we weren’t able to capture the moment but we did manage to get our hands on this satellite image at the time of the incident.

Just a short two weeks ago, China Virus had an insurmountable 26.5 point lead after the battle Golf event. However, that lead has shrunk to 9.5 points in just two weeks! Second place Quid Pro Crowe has made up 17 points over the last two match play events to make the final week of the season meaningful! Are we witnessing the biggest collapse or the greatest comeback in GCCGL history? “Po-tay-to” – “Po-tah-to”. However you choose to look at it, the “most hated team in GCCGL history” is hanging on by the thinnest of threads. What does this all mean for the last week of the GCCGL season? It means that 2nd place Quid Pro Crowe must finish two spots ahead of China Virus to win the 2010 GCCGL Championship and complete the most remarkable comeback in all of golf, never mind the GCCGL. Look, I don’t know about you and I might be a little prejudice here, but who would you rather see hoisting the 2020 GCCGL trophy this season? China Virus, the most hated GCCGL team in history, who gave us the now infamous, “it’s good if it goes” controversy during the last team scramble OR Quid Pro Crowe who arguably has the most liked GCCGL member in recent memory? The point is this….make sure you all have subs if necessary. Let’s make history on September 17th, 2020. Crowe needs this. This might be the thing that finally earns him enough points with the “Mrs” to give him one night out at Barley Corn’s with the guys. What do you say GCCGL? Are you in?

I love this time of year because it marks the end of match play events means it is time to recognize those members who’ve put together stellar years and acknowledge their triumphs and accomplishments.

I don’t have to remind all of you that we are losing daylight rapidly. PLEASE get to the course as early as possible next week. Please try to rent carts for your team so that we can play as fast as possible. PLEASE remember the Best Ball Scramble Rules. Every team member MUST use at least one drive! Please putt out anything that is outside of the rubber (no 6 foot gimmes!). And for the love of God, let’s try and not have any “it’s good if it goes” moments on the course. Remember, this is supposed to be a fun league and I know that I have a lot of fun being part of and playing in this league no matter who wins or loses, and I hope you do too.

The big winners this week were Dixon Plainview with 25 points. They were led by Cap who took 7 points. Quid Pro Crow continued their comeback run winning 24 points. They were led by PW who grabbed 7 points. The low net winners were (A/B) J Smith with a low net 31 and Cap again (C/D) with a low net 32. Congratulations to the winners! We play this week on the Pioneer back. The schedule is set! I hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ‘em straight!
