2019 – Week 1
The 24th season of the GCCGL campaign is on its way! TWENTY FOUR. Wow, that is a long time. It’s hard to believe that our little golf league has lasted that long. As I reflected on the longevity of the GCCGL, I started thinking about the long-time members of this crazy league which brings us to the topic of this week’s blog. Active members with the longest streaks without a GCCGL championship. Before I hit you with all kinds statistics, the point I want to make today is to emphasize how difficult it is to win one of the most coveted achievements in the Cincinnati region, the GCCGL Championship. It requires a delicate balance of talent, personality, dedication and a little luck. Check out some of these numbers.
Active Players Without A Championship
Player | Years (including 2019) |
Nick “Potter” Duer | 11 |
Joe “Couzin’ Joe” Cook | 10 |
Kurt “Lip Gloss” Kreyling | 09 |
How can it be that Potter, who unquestionably owns the “sweetest swing” in the league, has never won a GCCGL Championship? I’ll tell you how…..because it’s freakin’ hard. Potter just hasn’t found the right team with the right balance. What’s that old saying, “Even a blind chicken finds a kernel of corn every once in a while”? Maybe Potter should try playing blindfolded for the season. The results couldn’t get worse. I told you this isn’t easy.
Active Players Between Championships
Player | Years (including 2019) | Last Championship |
Pete “Goldie” Goldenberg | 15 | 2004 |
George “Portuguese Warrior” Almeida | 11 | 2008 |
Jason “Cupcake” Nill | 08 | 2011 |
Here’s another head scratcher. Goldie, who was officially voted as “The Most Consistent” GCCGL golfer in one of Cupcake’s surveys, is currently in his 15th year between GCCGL Championships. Think about that for a moment. FIFTEEN YEARS. Seriously man, we have members in this league that weren’t even wiping their own asses 15 years ago. Goldie is a GCCGL Hall of Famer. He is a respected man in the community…… the Jewish community, that is. How can this be? I’ll tell you how this can be…..finding the right combination of people to play together for 20 weeks at the level of play it takes to win a GCCGL championship ain’t simple.
Look, I mean no disrespect to the GCCGL veterans, I’m on this list too! They are the glue that keeps this thing together. The point is, that winning a GCCGL championship is as elusive as Urbano “El Hefe” Galindo, showing up two weeks in a row. It just doesn’t happen that often.
But could this be the year for some of the players on these lists? Perhaps. For instance, Wrath of Serkan members have a combined number of years without or between championships of 37 years! Has Potter lost his mind putting this team together this season? Or does he know something that others don’t know? Well, it was a good start for his team. We’ll see how the rest of the season goes.
The winners of the Florida Scramble were Wrath of Serkan who finished -3. Goat My Fairway, Bermuda Knights and I’d Tap That finished tied for second at -2. Bringing up the rear was Not So Perfect Attendance who finished even. The closest-to-the-pin winners were Cupcake (A/B) and Syndrome (C/D). Congratulations to the winners!
A couple of notes, since we only have 5 teams this season, there will only be 1st and 2nd place prizes this season. This is what we’ve done in the past. As disappointed as I was to hear that Lip Gloss won’t have as much time to write his famous Kreyling Korner blogs, I too am pressed for time this year. I promise to try each week to post “something” but I’m warning you now, they will be shorter and there will be times that I just won’t be able to do it. Therefore, I’m looking for guest bloggers. I know we’ve had a few volunteers, Syndrome, Das Boot and Han Solo. I appreciate it. Start thinking of material for 5/30 and 6/6 as I will be unavailable.
We begin match play next week on the Willows front nine. If you can’t make it, please give one of our subs a chance to play. Several of them have made it clear to me that they want to play this season. If you are a sub and WANT to play more often DON’T BE SHY. Let me know and we’ll give you a shout out on the blog. I’ll make sure to forward the message. We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ‘em straight!
