Week 9 Update

[dc]S[/dc]ince none of the commissioners were present on week 9, our resident substitute commissioner, Mike Harris, filled in. The following post is all Big Donkey’s words. I felt it would be appropriate to give Mike the stage for the week.  Who knows, this could morph into a new segment of the website (guest blogger).  Any comments in RED indicate my words.

The 9thWeek marks the halfway point of the season…Pretty nice evening weather wise.  The rain held off again… Partly Sunny – around 78 degrees – very very windy. Perfect Attendance – thanks to SEVEN subs… Berkley, Dominik, Fusting, McNeil, Rankin, Reinersman, Schemmel. Under the guidance of the Commissioner for a Day everyone was treated to a pre-round massage and a free bucket of balls on the range.

On the first tee, the entire league joined hands as we shared in a moment of silence for the missing Three Wisemen. Followed by a brief ceremony in which “Smitty” (one of the old rangers at Kenton County) hit three ceremonial tee shots in honor of Nill, Bloomhuff and Almeida. One high, one right and one worm burner. First feature match was between Golf Angel and Big Donkey. Let’s just say, that if Golf Angel had concentrated as hard at playing golf as she did at trying to take me out of my game, then she probably would have faired much better.  Read all about it on our new Members Only section.   The other featured match was between Zack McNeil and Syndrome. All I know about this matchup, was that prior to the match there was an over-riding concern that Syndrome’s normal behavior would be detrimental to the social development of young Zach.  Rayburn apparently started the match by telling Zach “If you beat me you little ****er, I’ll never play in your damn outing again”.   After that it was all politeness and manners I’m told.  In the end, it was Syndrome’s golf game that spoke loudly, as he waltzed  to an easy 7-3 victory.  Zach simply folded under the pressure of playing a better, more experienced golfer, in a pressure packed environment.  Zach was visibly shaken on the 9th hole as it took him several shots to get on the green in front of the gallery. I was told after that match, the John’s behavior was exemplary in the presence of the youngster… so much in fact, that John’s restriction of staying 200 yards away from any school or day care has been lifted.

T.W.I.G. Notes  (this week in golf)
Bedell suffered his first loss of the season to Matthew “Barry Gibb” McLinn… which in turn was Barry’s first win of the season.  Duer is looking like the golfer that dominated the 2ndhalf of last season.  He’s only 3-Over Par for his last 14 holes of golf… Not bad for a 7 handicapper.  Gunga Galunga had a huge week getting 25.5 points… led by Joe Carrier’s impressive 7-3 beat down of Cousin Joe.  Goldenberg started the round with 4 straight 4’ – giving him 13 consecutive 4’s dating back to last week.  Big Donkey is  3 under par (gross) for his last 18 holes and 2 under for his last 27 holes.  Who the hell is Neal Rankin?

On a side note… You know the pressure was building inside of Syndrome after watching his behavior and language for an entire round of golf.  As you may have guessed, it had to be released. Let’s just say my head was spinning as Syndrome unleashed a fury of anger, and some really big words ( “salient” was one of them) on the Manager of B-Dubs for not having Labatt’s in stock. Those 10 minutes alone, deserve an entire web page dedicated to it. All in All the Pot Luck was a huge success.

New Ideas for the website discussed…

The 19thHole:  3 Minute Video Chat featuring one of the 3 wise men talking about things Other Than Golf with one of the other members or subs in the league,  (this could be year round)  Pop Culture… TV… Music… Politics… Gas Prices… whatever.

Great Moments in GCCGL History – A List / Running total of all the funny weekly stuff that happens.  Examples:  Syndrome breaking his putter…   Goldie throwing the Rake towards the lake…  Allen almost getting in a fight on Willows 16… George getting hit by the ball.

Tips from the pro… 1 thought / sentence each week by Mike Harris to help everyone improve both in golf and in life.

I think Big Donkey did an excellent job on this post and on filling in for the “Three Wisemen”. Who will our next Guest Blogger be? I like the ideas pouring in. The newest addition, the Members Only section, was an idea hatched by our Golf Angel herself. So now there will be a reason to register. I will attempt to keep up with some of these new ideas and add new features as time allows. The Poll results are in. It was a landslide for extending the season to a 19th week (86% FOR, 14% AGAINST). More details as the end of the season nears. As for whether we should go back to the USGA handicap system, (44% said NO, but 56% said YES). However, the 56% was a combination of Yes votes and Do it Next Season votes. So it looks like a change of some sort will happen beginning next season. The commissioner’s office is already discussing processes that will make new members and subs HC more in-line with their real HC. We move to the back nine of the Pioneer for the next two weeks. New pics and videos were taken last week. View the video of JJ in the “gallery”. The pics were added to the GCCGL Photo Album. Check out the new poll question. Good luck to all. Hope to see you on the course!
