Week 14 Update
[dc]O[/dc]nly 4 weeks lefts in the 2011 GCCGL season! Can you believe that? We had another great turnout (19 of 20) golfers showed with one unexpected no-show. Another four subs filled in on another hotter-than-normal day in the Cincinnati area (Reinersman, Dominik, Glaser and McNeil from here on out known as “The Kid”). Thanks to all those who subbed!
The third non-match play event is in the books. The question on the table is, “Was the 2-Man Combined Net” a bust or success? See the poll and make your voice heard. If you want one humble co-commissioner’s opinion, I believe it was a bust. It was interesting in that the scores were pretty much close and when there was a lopsided 2-man match, the other pair would pick up the slack to even out the scoring. Consequently after all was said and done, there wasn’t a whole lot of movement in the standings. Seemed like a lot of work for little reward. But that’s just me.
Not much to talk about this week if you can believe that. There was the unexplainable slow play of the third group led by fellow co-commissioner Cletus. Now I know there were three others in that foursome but as a highly ranked official in the GCCGL commissioner’s office, it is his responsibility to keep play moving along. Instead what was witnessed was a lot of side-betting going on, a whole lot of horse play and a lot of standing around on the tee waiting for something…….not sure what. Co-commissioner Cupcake was so disturbed by the whole thing, he has threatened to take over the whole tee time operation. But it’s not all Cletus’ fault. The man is getting up there in years. He’s lost a spring or two in his step. Let’s face it, he’s so old he’s just happy to wake up alive in the morning, never mind remembering to put on his pants. He’s just happy the DMV still let’s him drive. A “good day” for Cletus is finding his car in the parking lot. He’s so old, his blood type was discontinued (Bill Dana). He’s so old, he adds a splash of formaldehyde in his coffee to stay preserved. Of course I’m just kidding. I just needed to blog about something this week. We love the old timer. If it weren’t for Cletus, we wouldn’t have several of the GCCGL classic moments such as the “Never question an 8!” creed. Click HERE to read more about how that creed came about in the GCCGL history section.
The rumblings around the league regarding the proposed 19th week (August 27th) 18 hole scramble indicate that a fair percentage of the league will not be able to make it that day. We need to make sure that we are OK to extend the league to a 19th week as soon as possible. The schedule needs to be revised no later than next Thursday, August 4th in order to be fair to the teams fighting it out for the championship. For example, it would be terribly unfair if one or two teams couldn’t muster up all four team members and/or suitable subs for the final scramble and lose based on that. Therefore please let the commissioner’s office know whether August 27th is feasible for a 19th week. If it turns out that we can not get enough members to participate, then we can go to a plan B which may be to still play on August 27th and head over to Syndrome’s for a post-round party BUT it would not count. Think of it like the baseball All-Stars game a few years back BEFORE it meant anything. Please EMAIL Almeida, Bloomhuff and Nill with a Yah or Nay before August 4th.
We have two more new subs, David Fausz and Tom Tucker (Bedell’s brother-in-law). Welcome aboard gentleman. As we wind down another wildly successful season, another idea popped up from one of our GCCGL members. The thought was, why not keep the “fun” going throughout the Fall and Winter. The idea was to form a bowling league. The GCCBL? I would be OK with running a website but I can not be the one who runs the league or organizes it. Not sure what the interest is but we’ll start with a Poll and see how existing GCCGL Members and Subs feel about it. If there seems to be enough interest, than an email can be sent to all HQ, teams can be formed, a bowling alley secured and a format developed. Again, this would have to be done by someone else (not me).
The 2-Man results are in. Gunga Galunga and The Heywoods, the 4th and 5th place teams came out ahead with 11.5 points. The Handi-Capped grabbed 10.5 points to increase their lead slightly over Sphincter Says What? who only managed 8.5 points. The Cletard Rollers finished last in the event with 8 points. The low net winners were Number 2 (Meyer) and The Kid (McNeil) (A/B) with a low net of 34 and Cletus (C/D) with a low net of 37. Congratulations! We finish up play on the Willows course this season this week on the back nine. Hope to see everyone out there next week and as always, hit ’em straight!
George Almeida, GCCGL Co-Commissioner
