KREYLING KORNER – WEEK #6 – 05-28-15
THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK
Stableford scramble this week – and thank God! Old Lip-Gloss has been TERRIBLE this year. Although, I did pick one match correctly last week. Granted it was not the MOW, but I still have a mark in the win column. Ironically, this one win is better than my actual playing record of 0-4. 2015 has not been kind to the “Glossy-One.”
THE KREYLING KORNER
The man above needs no introduction. Gary Player won 9 major championships over the course of his career, including the career grand slam (the only other players to do so post “Master’s era” are Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods). Mr. Player is known as the “Black Knight” and normally dresses head to toe in black when he plays. Say it with me kids…FORE-SHADOW-ING
It’s story time here at Kreyling Korner. Since 2015 is the inaugural year for the Hall of Fame, I’ve told various stories about the 2015 Hall of Fame Class. Cupcake went hiking in the Himalayas, the Portuguese Warrior had trouble getting off the tee…and Cletus. Well, it’s time for a Cletus Story.
One weekend, George “Bleaker” Remington wanted to squeeze in a quick nine holes. As he is about to tee off, Cletus shuffles onto the tee and asks if he can join him. Now Bleaker knows his quick nine holes just turned into a very long afternoon. Bleaker, being a stand-up young man says, “Of course.”
To Bleaker’s surprise, the old man is playing quickly. He doesn’t hit the ball very far (at all), but it goes straight. And for once, Cletus moves along without wasting any time. When they reach the ninth fairway of the Willows, George is facing a tough shot. A large pine tree sits in front of his ball, directly between it and the green.
After several minutes pondering how to hit the shot, Cletus says, “You know, when I was your age, I’d hit the ball right over that tree.” With the challenge before him, Bleaker swings hard, hits the ball, watches it fly into the branches, rattle around, and land with a thud a foot from where it had started.
“Of course,” Cletus says, “when I was your age, that tree was only three feet tall.”
Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
