Kreyling Korner – Week #5 – 05/16/19

Cook wins low net and destroys Cap, Roller plays better but still ties Galindo.  That’s two Ls for the MOW taking me to 1-3 on the season.  I’m really not good at this!

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

A/B Group – Bill “???” Nixon vs. Nick “Potter” Duer – Going with an inaugural match in this week’s A/B MOW.  And why wouldn’t I?  Bill “I’m Not a Crook” Nixon (just trying out some nick names here) has been a coveted sub for years in the GCCGL.  Finally, his kids are grown and he deiced to bring his sweet swing to the league.  So far so good, as Bill “Not the Science Guy” Nixon (no?) is off to a hot start at 2-0-1, averaging 5.7 points a week!  His opponent, Potter is also off to a hot start with a match play record of 2-0, averaging 7 points a week.  How has Potter put together such impressive rounds to start the season?  There are a lot of theories, but I think the most creditable has to do with the “hot takes” by the founder of the GCCGL.  George’s posts, when he makes them, have been clearly aimed at people’s inabilities.  Take for example the week 1 post in which George made one of his fancy charts.  Who was at the top of the chart?  Potter and his 11 years without a championship (another league secret kept from no one).  Looks like that might have been all the fuel he needed as Nick’s 2019 performance has placed his team squarely in first place, 16 points ahead of the closest chaser.

GLOSSY PREDICTION – I could easily justify picking either one of these two.  Duer getting two strokes on the easy front nine of Pioneer – it’s hard to go against the hot hand.  To quote the great Roy MacAvoy, “you ride her until she bucks you, or you don’t rider her at all.” Potter wins 5.5-4.5.

C/D Group – Matt “The Politician” Bedell vs. George “Portuguese Warrior” Almeida – Speaking of the old PW, he takes on the Politician this week.  Overall these two have met 6 times and both are even at 3-3.  Like everyone in this week’s MOW, George is on fire to start 2019 with a record of 3-0 and an average of 6.5 points each week; Bedell is not far behind at 2-1 with an average of 5.7 points.  What I find interesting about this match-up is how evenly distributed the wins and losses are historically based on the golf course.  2 of George’s wins are on the front of the Pioneer, 2 of Matt’s wins are on the back of the Willows, they split on the front of the Willows.

GLOSSY PREDICTION – as a wise man once said, “if history repeats itself, I’m so getting a dinosaur.” Wait…is that how it goes?  What I’m trying to say is I’m taking George’s two strokes and his history on the front of Pioneer.  Portuguese Warrior wins 6-4.

THE KREYLING KORNER

For those of you who don’t pay attention to professional golf, a new tournament schedule became effective for 2019.  Most of you are probably thinking – big deal.  Well, it kind of is.  Under the new schedule, the PGA Championship was moved from August to May, and the opening tee balls were struck this morning at the Bethpage Black course.  What this means is we get “big” golf tournaments each month of the season – the Players in March, Masters in April, PGA Championship in May, US Open in June, British Open in July, and FedEx Cup in August.  In years of Ryder Cups, that would fall in September.  I personally love the change!  This actually has nothing to do with the Kreyling Korner topic this week – so let’s move along.

You know what we haven’t done in a long time – golf quote association!  Below are three quotes I’ve searched the depths of the world wide web to find relating to golf. I will then pick a GCCGL member who closely identifies with each quote.

Quote #1

“I’m about five inches from being an outstanding golfer.  That’s the distance me left ear is from my right.” – Ben Crenshaw

Ahhhh yes Ben, golf is a very mental game.  So many golfers in the GCCGL struggle with the mental aspect in the league.  Some of the popular choices – Ollie: who constantly wigs out about the amount of strokes he is giving or getting or how far his opponent hits a ball.  Me – I’ve sucked for the 9 years I’ve been a member.

However, I think the winner is our man Andy Crowe.  I could give you countless examples as to why, but the best would be his “refusal” to use a putter when he is just off the green.  I’ve actually talked him through this decision in the past.  He will be 3 feet off the green with a clear path to the hole…and every time he chips.  I’ve asked him why…and his response, “I want to make it.”  That’s great Crowe, but you always hit the ball 8 feet past and 2 putt on the way back.  Knock a putt up there to two feet to begin with and save a stroke.  Use your brain my friend!!!

 Quote #2

“If profanity had an influence on the flight of the ball, the game of golf would be played far better than it is.” – Horace G. Hutchinson

Another quote with endless possibilities.  I think there are two main candidates.  I’ll start with runner-up, Jason “Cupcake” Nill.  It’s no secret the guy cusses like Samuel L. Jackson.  The only problem is have you to listen for it.  Most of the curse words are under his breath.  Funny yes, but I need it to be much louder to get the win with this golf quote.

For that reason we give this quote to the GCCGL resident hot head, Pete Goldenberg.  I have to admit, Goldie has mellowed out in the last couple years.  Maybe it’s old age, maybe it’s the new driver – no one really knows why.  What I do know, there is a melt down coming in 2019, and it will be awesome when it happens!

Quote #3

“I don’t usually one putt, but when I do its usually for double bogey.” – The Most Interesting Man in the World

This is a no-brainer – John “Syndrome” Rayburn.  I mean who else can we give this quote to?  This guy uses the phrase, “never question an 8” more than anyone in the league!  If that isn’t enough, let’s take a look at the current overall Rayburn Versus the League stats – 7 wins for the year with a winning percentage of 14.9%.  Yikes!  Syndrome, you bring so much entertainment to the league…no one cares how you play!

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
