Kreyling Korner – Week #11 – July 1, 2021

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

Pink Ball Scramble this week so no MOW.  Rayburn took an L from Serkan way back in week 9 and Ole Lip-Gloss is on a losing streak.  Halfway through the 2021 season and the overall record stands at 3-2.

THE KREYLING KORNER

I’m going to try a new segment this week called “chip shots” – a quick list of random topics.

OG’s

The old guy above is Lloyd Mangrum.  Mr. Mangrum is a member of the world Golf Hall of Fame (inducted in 1998) and had 36 wins while on the PGA tour.  His lone major win was a US Open in 1946, but he could have more had he not served in the US Army during World War II.  During his service he was awarded two purple hearts, two silver stars and two bronze stars.  Lloyd earned the nick-name “Mr. Icicle” because nothing ever affected his emotions while on the golf course.

Underrated Golf Movie Scene

I’m not sure how many of you have seen the movie Swingers, especially you younger guys, but if you get a chance watch it.  The premise is simple – a group of unemployed actors hitting on girls during the early 90s.  Aside from the awesome cast – Jon Favreau, Vince Vaugh, Ron Livingston and Heather Graham – there is a golf scene with Favreau and Livingston that is pretty great.  I’m not going to do it justice here, but after both these guys hit some incredibly bad shots on the first hole of a par three course – they utter the lines “Dead heat after one hole.  This is turning into quite a rivalry.”  The score on the hole – don’t ever question an 8.

Pink (Golf) Balls

1.2 billion golf balls are produce a year; 300 million are estimated to be lost in the USA alone.

Happy Birthday America

Happy Fourth of July to all the members of the GCCGL.  I know most of us will get at least one round in during this long holiday weekend.  A couple of things to remember as you hit the links.  Make sure your clothes combine the most outrageously tacky combination of red, white and blue.  And, if you are playing a course that has the American Flag for a pin, look for “pin holders.”  As we all know, Old Glory isn’t supposed to touch the ground.  It doesn’t always happen, but some courses will put metal stakes on the side of the green to hold the pin, obviously upholding the before mentioned sign of respect.  I haven’t seen this a lot of places, but always did think this was a nice touch when used.

Golf Clap

Well done Big Donkey on the weekly updates.  I agree with your assessment on blogging having a negative impact on your performance.  It took me like 6 years to figure out how to blog and play decent golf.  Yup, I’m going with that.

Until next week – fairways and greens my friends.
