Welcome back GCCGLers!  It’s been roughly 8 months since I’ve seen you.  What’s that?  No, you don’t look like you’ve gained weight.  And no, you hair doesn’t look thinner or greyer at all.  You look good!  By the way, congrats on moving up tees this year.  You’re right…it will be good for you! 

Here we go friends!  The 29^th year of the GCCGL is upon us. Not only does week 1 bring the Flo-Rida Scramble, it signifies that spring has sprung and that summer is just around the corner.  For the next 20 weeks, Thursday evenings will bring hacker golf and cold beer.  And that…is why there is excitement!   

THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK

Obviously, the Flo-Rida Scramble means no MOW in week 1.  However, I want to take week 1 as an opportunity to set a goal for the 2024 MOW record.  In 2023 I finished 6-5, so that’s a winning percentage of 55%.  I went back and checked the archives and I did my FIRST ever MOW in week 16 of 2013.  After that week, it became a normal weekly event and I recorded my first winning season last year after writing MOWs for 10 seasons.  One thing is for sure – it sure as hell takes me a long time to have success in this stupid league.  11 years before a GCCGL championship; 10 years before a winning record in the MOW.  The bar is set at a 55% winning percentage in 2024!

Out with the Old, in with the New!

2024 marks the exit of some long-time members in the GCCGL, but as the saying goes, “don’t let the door hit you in the ass…”  6 rookies make their GCCGL debut tonight.  And of those 6, 4 of them have never even subbed.  Some of you may have noticed in PW’s preseason blog the mention of the LEAGUE EFFECT.  I highly suggest you rookies read about the league effect and adjust your expectations accordingly.  Don’t believe me, below is a list of current members and how they faired in their rookie season of the GCCGL. 

There is hope, Nixon, Cap, Welling and Tally all did manage wining records, but chances are…your going to be a loser.  Editor’s Note – I didn’t include the Portuguese Warrior, Cletus, Cupcake or Goldie because they had rookie seasons from 2000 or before.  The only stats I could find on Wins and Losses was from 2001 forward.  Yes, I could have asked Jason for the status, but I’m lazy.

Internship

Speaking of rookies, Brady Gosney joins the ranks of full time member in 2024.  Although technically a rookie, he is no stranger to the GCCGL being a regular sub for the last two years.  This kid thinks he is such a regular he wanted to RUN a live draft.  Now listen, I agree that a live draft is much more enjoyable then doing it over email.  But people are busy and it’s hard to get everyone together, so we have typically done it over email.  Not as sexy, but efficient.  Well I told young Brady if he wants to get a live draft together, I’ll let him run it and if successful, he will officially have a GCCGL Co-Commissioner internship.  I also made it very clear there was a high likelihood I would NOT be present.   

I’ll give Brady credit, he did manage to find a time for all the C players to get together on a night.  But my man, success comes on the follow-through.  Once organized, you have to actually show up to the draft and run the damn thing.  You know like have the drafting order ready, write down the teams, those sort of things.  Big old whiff by the B man on that one…he didn’t even show up.  Needless to say, the Co-Commissioner internship is still wide open.
