July 19, 2012 Update
[dc]I[/dc] can’t believe we didn’t get rained on. The thunder was rolling on the first tee, yet we made it through the round relatively dry. We had another good turnout this week with 21 of 24 golfers showing up. The recent rain softened the course up a bit and you would think that would have made for lower scores but it didn’t. We had 29% of golfers play under par (HC adjusted of course) compared to last week’s 42% despite the dry and windy conditions. Of course the tees were back this week due to the Amateur Championship earlier in the day at Kenton County Willows. Maybe that was the reason for the higher scores.
It was another very quiet week. These seem to be more common when Syndrome is out of town, go figure. There were some humorous moments however. A quick look at the week 13 results and it was hard not to notice a posted score of 10 on the first par 3 (hole #11). Now, I can imagine a bizarre “Tin Cup”scenario on the second Par 3 over the water involving a (C/D) player such as our own Syndrome for example. We are all familiar with his water fascination and his propensity to empty out a complete box of golf balls on such a hole. So a score of 10 isn’t as far fetched. But Syndrome was miles away in a Memphis airport eating barbecue and drinking PBR. No, this score was posted by an (A/B) player, Mr. Zeke Knechtges. Here’s how it happened in Zeke’s own words:
1: Tee Shot into the right front bunker
2: Wet Compacted Sand = no give or cushion = blading it into the woods
3: Drop
4: Punch out from under a tree
5: Flubbed Chip
6: Flubbed Chip
7: Flubbed Chip
8: do I need to type it again?
9: On the fringe finally, and I probably should have learned from my last four shots and putted, but didn’t
10: Screw you guys I’m walking off this hole!
The second Par 3 (hole #17) fared much better. In fact, there were two birdies on that hole this week, both by GCCGL commissioners. One by Cupcake and one by me! We both hit an 8 iron from the tee to approximately 10-12 feet and sunk the putt. However, in the Harris/Roller match something amusing happened. Roller decided to hit a 9 iron which is his normal 139 yard club I assume. Right before Roller hits, Harris asks him, “Snoodle, What are you hitting?” He replies, “A 9 iron”. Harris, “A 9 iron! I have a 7 iron!” Roller proceeds to smash his 9 iron way over the green. You would think Harris would have walked back to his bag and grabbed his pitching wedge at this point, but he didn’t. He stuck with his 7 iron and stuck close and wound up with par. He turns to Roller and says, “I told you 7 iron was the right club”.
We are down to 4 weeks left in the GCCGL season! Half of those are non-match play events! This week was tagged “moving” week by Couzin’ Joe and his words rang true. The big winners this week were NQ8! after destroying Menace to Sobriety (25 – 15). They were led by the Commish (me!) who thrived in a no-pressure situation playing against the card. I’ll take it! The big win moved them into the money in 3rd place. UMass Debate Team won their match with the Big Tebowski’s (21.5 18.5). It was a team effort with 3 of the 4 team members taking 6 points each. Meanwhile, the 1st and 2nd place teams went head-to-head in a very closely contested match with Balls of Fury squeaking a narrow (20.5-19.5) victory. With only four weeks left, we have only 8.25 points separating the top four teams! This is one of the closest races in GCCGL history.
We have a clarification on the additional award for Points Champion. The total points counted will be only the points that the player has won themselves. It will not include the points won by their subs throughout the season. The Points Champion will win $20. You can find this information in the Results section of the website in commissioner Cupcake’s results spreadsheet. The contenders for the Points Champion are:
Ollie – 70 points
Couzin’ Joe – 67.5 points
Cupcake – 67 points
Cletus – 66.5 points
We are also adding a Best Winning Percentage award also $20. The contenders for this award are:
Cletus – 9 wins 2 losses (.818%)
Snoodle – 7 wins – 2 losses (.778%)
Goldie – 7 wins – 2 losses (.778%)
Carrier – 7 wins – 3 losses (.700%)
The highly anticipated Stableford scramble is upon us! The goal of this event is not so much about having the lowest score as much as it is how you achieved that score. Read more about the modified Stableford points system here. A perfectly respectable score is anything between 13 – 15 points. Anything above that is spectacular. You are going for Eagles or better for this event. There are a few Eagle opportunities on the Pioneer front. Eagles are worth 5 points, Birdies 2 points, Par is worth 1 point. Bogue is -1 point, double-bogue or worse -3 points. And if you are lucky to score double-eagle or better then that’s worth 8 points. Finally, whatever points you accumulate, is the number of points you win for the week.
Our Golf Angel, with direction from Syndrome, is attempting to start a new GCCGL tradition and organize an end-of-season outing at the beautiful Elks Run golf course. We are opening this event to everyone in the league (members and subs) and anyone else you may think would want to join the festivities. The more folks we have, the better opportunity we have for a shotgun start. Drinks, food, friends and golf, what’s not to like about this? The day is August 25th. Melissa will be sending an email to everyone also. We need to firm up the number of participants quickly so please contact Melissa for details.
The winners of the low net were Allen Bloomhuff (A/B) with a low net of 31 and Brad “Keebler” Cunningham with a low net of 30. Congratulations to the winners! We move to the front nine of the pioneer for the next two weeks. If you can’t make it this week, please try to get a sub. Normal scramble substitution rules apply (must be within 3 strokes of HC). Hope to see you on the golf course and as always, hit ’em straight!
