Arrival of “The Gallery”
Week 3 – May 13th, 2010 Update
The storm clouds went north and we actually had a pretty decent night for golf. Yes it was ridiculously humid, but we stayed dry and had plenty of daylight. We had a perfect turnout! For the first time this season we had 20 of 20 golfers show up. We had two subs this week to help us out. This has to be the best start attendance-wise that we’ve ever had. I know once Summer kicks in and the weather starts to boil, attendance may suffer a bit but I like this group of regular members and I think we have a strong list of subs who want to play this season. Keep it going fellas.
Well, apparently a new GCCGL tradition has started this season. The “gallery shot” is quickly becoming a staple on the GCCGL tour. It all started with Nate Berkley’s errant shot on the 9th green on Week 2. I tried to describe it as best I could in last week’s wrap-up but words just doesn’t do it enough justice. Wouldn’t you know it, this week we not only had another gallery shot opportunity, we had two of them. And this time we were ready to capture the moment.
First up was Matt Bedell who hit his ball in almost the same exact place as Sir Nate did last week. Because they were in the next to last group, the gallery was a bit sparse but nonetheless, just as ruthless as last week’s crowd.
Second up was J.J. (a.k.a Joe Eiser). Now there were an additional four gallery members so the pressure was greater. What was really funny about this gallery opportunity was that the shot was hit towards the back center of the green. Normally the gallery congregates to the right of the green near the cart path. As soon as the ball lands, the gallery immediately picks up their beverages of choice and calmly flock to the ball, you know, just like they do it on the pro tour. Once again, a horseshoe is formed and the moment is captured by our resident photographer, Chris Meyer. Check out the fool in the tree. Too funny.
The point of all this is start practicing your approach shots, especially on the last hole of the evening, otherwise you too will fall victim to “The Gallery“.
As many of you know, throughout the course of a 2+ hour round of golf, there’s a lot of time to kill in between shots. This time is normally filled with a lot of useless and meaningless banter between fellow colleagues. One such example is a conversation that took place on the fourth tee in my foursome which included Cletus, Top Shelf (Rayburn) and Donnie Golf Game. I can’t get into the details of it all but it started out innocently enough with talk of the hot humid weather and quickly turned into a discussion about sticky thong underwear, going commando, manscaping and a way too detailed description of ……… I can’t even say it. You’d think it would have stopped there but somehow it progressed into a heated discussion concerning Cupcake (Nill), the art of telling a joke and bestiality. By the time it was done, Donnie Golf Game was so stressed, he promptly plunked his tee shot into the drink.
Enough, there actually was some golf played last Thursday. The match of the week arguably was between two commissioners (Bloomhuff and Almeida). The match went back and forth all night. I was up 2-0 and had Cletus on the ropes, but I couldn’t shake the old man. He was like a klingon hanging on for dear life. He took the next three holes and we wound up tied 5-5. Good match. I’m afraid the content of this website is degrading faster than Allen’s youth. I’m asking our resident female players, Lisa and Melissa to help us keep grounded and to let the commissioner’s office know if things are getting out of control. Thank you!
ABB was the big winner this week grabbing 24.5 points! WOGD finally finally got over the hump and took 21.5 points. So far it’s a tight race with only 8.5 points separating top from bottom.
The winners of the low net were Chris Meyer (A/B) with a net 29 and 4 separate players from the (C/D) group Almeida, Bloomhuff, Metz and Berkley with a low net of 32. It figures when I win low net, 10 other people shoot out of their azz. I for one am contributing my winnings this week to the Kicks for Matt Foundation. I’m doing my part. Nice rounds gentlemen.
The schedule is set. We move to the back nine of the Pioneer next week. Coming soon is a new addition to the GCCGL website. Player profiles are being drafted to help members study their opponent so they know WHO they are playing and how best to approach their upcoming matches. If you’d like to write your own profiles, please submit them to George Almeida or if you have any interesting facts you’d like to offer concerning yourselves or other members, please do so. Because there are so many new members this season, we may not have profiles for all our regular members. Please take a look at the poll question this week and state your opinion.
