2020 – Opening Tee

The start of the 25th season of the GCCGL is almost here! Meet your 2020 GCCGL teams! This coronavirus thing has really brought a lot of uncertainty to this world but as of this post, the 25th season of the GCCGL is still on schedule. Although “league play” doesn’t officially start until 4/23, the two-week preseason begins on 4/9. Therefore, if you want to get in a couple of practice rounds, please join us on Thursday, April 9th for the first of two practice rounds. New members are encouraged to come out to get a couple of scores in to help calculate your handicap.

There is a new league rotation this season. We rotate courses every week instead of every two weeks. Here is the new GCCGL League Rotation. Also, if you want, please read the latest news from Kenton County Golf Course regarding League Start Concerns. While you’re reading that, you might as well read the 2020 GCCGL League Agreement too.

Please note, due to the virus outbreak, things are still very fluid. There is a very good chance that the start of the season will be delayed. We’ll just have to wait and see. As of now, the golf course is open but that doesn’t necessarily mean the leagues will start on time. Stay tuned and stay safe. This thing will be over soon and we’ll all be golfing in no time.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken its toll on the economy and the GCCGL is no exception. The following financial changes have been made for the 2020 season. The dues will stay at the same rate $60. Weekly prizes will be reduced $0.50 to ($16). First and second place winnings will be reduced to $40 and $25 per player. The Points and WinPCT Leader prizes will be reduced to $15 each. There will be no 3rd place prize during the 5-team season. These changes were necessary to keep the GCCGL solvent for the 2020 season.  We hope to move into the green again next season when we add a 6th team.

Now for everyone’s favorite blog post of the year, the annual GCCGL championship predictions from Top to Bottom. I like the team names this year, I hope you do too because your stuck with them for the next 20+ weeks.

(1st Place)

Cupcake Exotics
Nixon
Kreyling
Nill
Livermore
Surprise, surprise. Cupcake and Lip Gloss are on the same team again. Let’s call this what it is, a full-on man-crushing, testosterone-pumping bromance. They basically have the same team as last year when they finished third. Will the upgrade from Gobstopper to the Disgraced President be enough to finally break Cupcake’s 9-year championship drought or get LG off his No Championship slide? Time will tell.
(2nd Place)

Gout My Fairway 2.0
Roller
Eiser
Bedell
Rayburn
This team looks indestructible on paper, but then again so did the Titanic. It all hinges on two factors. Which Syndrome will show up this year? Will it be the gout-infested shell of a man that finished with a paltry .393 winning percentage last season or will it be the 2017 JR who had a career-high 7 wins and 79.5 points? The second, and more important, factor is whether Snoodles has sought real psychiatric help after his dismal 2019 performance which unleashed the now famous, It Gets Better campaign.
(3rd Place)

Dixon Plainview
Goldenberg
Morell
Bachmann
Capannari
This team is the sleeper of the season. Don’t be surprised if this team hangs around long enough to cause some serious waves in the GCCGL standings. Goldie is coming off a championship season, Meat has quietly become one of the more steady players in this league and Cap’s handicap is still over-inflated giving him an edge at least in the first half of the season. Don’t kid yourself, Bachmann might have a face that looks like he just stepped off the short bus, but he knows exactly what he’s doing.
(4th Place)
Quid Pro Crowe
Harris
Roddy
Almeida
Crowe
Big Donkey is back as a full-time, dues paying GCCGL member after a two-year hiatus following his spat with Lip Gloss. Don’t worry, we’ll have more to say about this dynamic later (um….like the rest of the season!). There shouldn’t be any shortage of blog material this year folks! Anyway, BD is seeking a record-breaking 7 GCCGL championship and is paired with PW for the first time in GCCGL history! But there are a lot of questions surrounding this team. Will Han Solo finally have his break-out season? How will The Senator deal with an off-season shoulder injury? Will PW ever stop shrinking? Too much uncertainty here to predict where this team will end up.
(5th Place)
China Virus
Duer
Cook
Freeman
Ethridge
Fresh off a championship season, The Assassin reunites with Potter in an attempt to rekindle last season’s magic. Picking Potter as his A player could backfire. We all know Potter can’t handle pressure very well and this might just drive him back to Hogwarts. Couple that with Swiper’s handicap dwindling by the minute, you have to wonder, what was Serkan thinking? If this team finishes towards the bottom in first scramble, they’ll drop in the standings faster than the stock market following the first sneeze in China Town. Too soon?

So there you have it. Take it to the bank! If you are up for it and weather permitting, our first practice round is on April 9th! If you can make it to the course this Thursday, then get out there.  The schedule is yet to be set for the regular season. Good luck everyone and please stay healthy before now and the start of the 25th Anniversary season of the GCCGL!
