2018 – Week 7
Good morning fellow GCCGL members! First of all, please accept my apologies for not blogging last week. Memorial Day weekend is tough. I truly could not find a window of opportunity to sit down and create a worthy blog post. The GCCGL commissioner’s office has standards and we refuse to put out sub-par content. In other words, you get our best or you get nothing at all.
What a week! The big news this week was Crowe’s first victory! After starting his career 0-15-1 in his young GCCGL career, Crowe posted his first victory on week 7 against Gobstopper (5.5 – 4.5). It was a close match and, in fact, Crowe didn’t even know he won. He mistakenly scored one of Gobstoppers holes and thought the match was a tie. But as the two of them were verifying their scorecards, Troy noticed the mistake and corrected the score to a 7 instead of a 6 which gave the win to Crowe. If you are lucky enough to have gotten to know Troy over the years, then this wouldn’t have surprised you in the least. Troy exemplifies the true essence of what this great game of golf is all about. It’s a gentlemen’s game where your true opponent is yourself and where honesty and trust are never questioned. I hope all of us would have done what Troy did last week. I think most, if not all, of us would have.
Anyway, Crowe’s first “W” means his nickname of “Cleveland” is short-lived. Although I don’t quite understand it, the new consensus is “Hans Solo”. I don’t get it really but it’s done. Crowe’s player profile has been updated to reflect all of this. Speaking of Player Profiles, I know there are other player profiles that are incomplete. I’ll try to get the rest of them completed this season. We celebrated the victory with a small ice cream sundae. Look at how happy he looks.
By that way, it’s NO COINCIDENCE that Hans Solo gets his first victory the very first week after the Cleveland Pool was launched. I told all of you last week that all the kid needed was some focus and incentive. I don’t mind taking full credit for this win. I’ve been preaching to anyone who’ll listen, the Portuguese are very giving people. Sure, our country’s economic environment is in shambles. And YES, it might take us 6 months to pave a couple of miles of road and so WHAT we close our only village grocery food store for 2 hours in the middle of the day for lunch, the bottom line is that all we want is for everyone to be happy. So, YOUR WELCOME Crowe!
By the way, the winner of the Cleveland Pool was Meat. He guessed the week, the correct match play score and the correct gross score for Crowe. Meat wins 60% of the pool. A whopping $18! Crowe receives 40% which comes to $12. The league gets $1 for administrative costs. Congratulations guys!
Hans Solo’s first victory wasn’t the only big news this week. Catalina Wine Mixer moved out of last place this week! It was just a few short weeks ago that the entire league had written this team off as the worst ever in GCCGL history! As the infamous blogger Lip Gloss would say, CWM is TRENDING UP!
There is SO MUCH to blog about like the Squirts/Big Donkey match where not a single putt was given or Taylormade Golf screwing up Big Donkey’s personalized hat order shipping him a hat with the words, “Pollo Loco” which is “Crazy Chicken” in Spanish instead of “Big Donkey”. One can only sympathize and wonder about that little Guatemalan boy, after spending his life savings on a new customized golf hat and opening up his package from Taylormade, expecting to see his new “Pollo Loco” hat but instead gets “Big Donkey” and looking up to his father and asking him, “Oh padre, ¿por qué dice mi sombrero, Grande Burro?“. That is sad indeed. I don’t even have time to bog about the post-round conversation regarding the game of Badminton and the art of hitting a Shuttlecock. Yes, this was one of the many topics of conversation at Barleycorn’s over cold beer and chicken wings. By the way, when did they rename the game to Badminton? I always thought it was Bagmitton? No? But I’m keeping my promise of keeping the blogs as short as possible this season. The GCCGL Commissioner’s office knows how busy everyone is and we are prepared to do everything possible to accommodate.
The big winners this week were The Hackstreet Boys who decimated The Process (26.5 – 13.5). This team was the commissioner’s office “sleeper” pick of the season. Watch out for this team. They were led by Goldie who nabbed 8 points. Catalina Wine Mixer beat Putter Face (26.6 – 16.5) lifting them out of the cellar for the moment. They were led by both Meat and PW who both took 7.5 points. Ballers…Schott Callers and Donkey’s Disciples dueled to a (20 –20) tie. However, this dropped Ballers…Schott Callers into last place by ½ a point.
The low net winners were Meat (A/B) with a low net of 28. Meat shot gross par! Great round Meat! Swiper (C/D) also took low net with a ridiculous 25. His HC dropped three strokes. Enjoy these times Swiper, the day of reckoning is coming. Great round though! Congratulations to the winners! We continue on the Pioneer front. We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ’em straight!
