2020 – Week Thirteen

Are you a superstitious person? We’d all like to believe we are above the excessively credulous belief in the supernatural happenings. I mean most of us have common sense and we don’t actually believe in witchcraft or sorcery, except for Nick “Potter” Duer, god bless him. Yet, I seriously doubt that any one of us hasn’t tried to avoid tempting fate by knocking on wood at least once in their life. Am I right? This brings us to the unlucky number 13. It was week 13 in the GCCGL this past week. It certainly proved to be unlucky for team China Virus, who’s winning streak was ended in a big way. More on that later. However, it turned out to be very lucky for the rest of the league except for Dixon Plainview who continue to slide deeper into the grave after another dreadful week. It wasn’t that long ago that Dixon Plainview was on top of the standings after a fast start, but things change quickly in the GCCGL. Superstitions are kind of funny aren’t’ they? Why is it bad luck to walk under a ladder or break a mirror?  Why do the Turks believe chewing gum at night turns you into a Zombie? Serkan might have some insight on that one. The Turks aren’t the only people with strange superstitions. The Portuguese people believe if you are born left-handed, you’re cursed. Sorry Lip Gloss, it’s true. I still remember the look of horror on my parents face when my younger brother Manny picked up his first crayon with his left hand and started drawing. No matter how hard they tried to break him of that that “habit”, he’d always go back to his left hand. Their disgust was our gain (my twin brother and I). We finally had a southpaw for our whiffle ball team. Maybe it’s not the number 13, maybe, just maybe, it’s the GCCGL that is cursed. Either way, it makes for interesting blog material.

How about Matt “The Politician” Bedell this week? Week 13 was certainly good for him. I knew something special had happened because there was a large congregation surrounding Matt after the round. There were a lot of smiles and googly eyes on him and everyone seemed to want a piece of The Politician. I wasn’t in his foursome but I wanted the scoop, so I found an opening and cornered him for a few minutes and we talked for a long time after the round. That’s when it hit me. The word that comes to mind is “perfect”. I asked The Politician, when you woke up this morning, did you have an inkling, that your day would wind up like this? He confided that he did not do anything different and that he just woke up with his hair positioned so perfectly. It was mesmerizing, staring at that those salt and pepper locks, waving in the subtle summer breeze… Oh…yea, and he shot par.

China Virus’ winning streak is over, and the commissioner’s office is being blamed for it. Potter approached me on the driving range about a conspiracy to jinx China Virus by “throwing shade” on his team in the weekly GCCGL and Kreyling Korner blogs. Of course, I did not know what he was referring to. We just report the news as accurately and objectively as possible. I think you’re getting a little paranoid Nick. You might want to call your little buddies at Hogwarts and conjure up a potion to keep your team from nosediving down the GCCGL standings. Remember, it’s easy to be in 1st place. The hard part is staying there.

The 2nd place team, QPC, could be in trouble. Their A-Player, Big Donkey, is on the disabled list with lower back issues. It’s time for the other team members to step up their game and hold their own until Big Donkey can get back, if he gets back. It was a good start though as QPC earned a rare “W” during a match play week. They were led by PW, who managed 7 points against Gobstopper’s card. I know it was against the card, but a win is a win. We’ve been talking about superstition this week, but there is something magical happing with this whole “cargo shorts and no glasses” strategy thing that PW has gone to. Yes, I’m superstitious. Since applying this tactic, PW has gone 3-0 with an average of 6.66 points per match. “666”…holy crap, I just got goosebumps! Are you all believers now? One thig is for sure, I’m not changing a thing!

The big winners this week were Gout My Fairway 2.0 with 24 points. They were led by Matt “Perfect Hair” Bedell who grabbed 9 points and shot even par. Cupcake Exotics also took 24 points this week and were led by Cupcake who won 7 points this week. As stated above, Quid Pro Crowe also had a nice week. They had some help from super-sub Danielle Hayes, who stole 7 points from an extra angry Goldie this week.

The low net winners were (A/B) Mike “Meat” Morell with a low net 32 and Zak Efron (C/D) with a low net 28. Congratulations to the winners! We play this week on the Pioneer back.  Unfortunately, PW will not be able to blog next week. We are looking for a guest blogger. Any takers?  The schedule is set! I hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ‘em straight!
