2015 – Week 8
Week 8 of the GCCGL 20th anniversary season went off without a hitch despite two of GCCGL’s finest co-commissioners being out, three other GCCGL members also unable to make it and the Portuguese Warrior being sick and barely able to speak. Despite being all by myself, fellow co-commissioners Cupcake and Lip Gloss made it easy on me by preparing and sending me the necessary information prior to tee time to keep things running smoothly. And as a bonus, co-commissioner Cupcake even took the time to summarize the Result spreadsheet and upload the data to the blog on Thursday evening before leaving for vacation. Thanks Cupcake! Vacation season has officially begun! We had the most subs fill in this week than any other week thus far (6). A huge thanks to Bush, Hellman, Tucker, Schott, Knechtges and Dominik! We are almost half way through the season and we still have a perfect attendance record! This has never been accomplished in the history of the GCCGL. Great job so far. Let’s keep it going!
I didn’t have a lot of time this weekend so this week’s blog is kind of short and sweet. Although 2 of the 5 subs won their matches this week, overall it’s been a tough season for the alternates. So far this season, substitutes have compiled a 4 (wins) 13 (losses) 1 (tie) record. But don’t despair my treasured reserves, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to redeem yourselves. Vacation season has kicked in so keep those clubs polished and Thursday evenings open. I’ve said it before, what makes this league so special are the participants and their commitment in involving the 30+ subs as much as possible and striving for perfect attendance each and every week. If you are sub who has not yet had a chance to fill in and do not have an established handicap yet, please start turning in some score cards. You will get called to sub.
Since we were without co-commissioners Cupcake and Lip Gloss to fill me in on the other foursome action, I can only comment on the events that happened within my foursome of Radio, Syndrome, Ollie and myself. We got started a bit late waiting for Syndrome who was stuck in traffic and although we weren’t setting any records for pace of play, we did manage to stay relatively close to the foursome in front of us. However, we were getting pushed all night long by a father and his little girl, who had to be no older than 12. It’s a bit emasculating to have a little snot-nosed brat constantly hitting up on you and giving you the “Oh for the love of God man, hit the ball!” look. You know that look. It’s the same look that Syndrome and I gave Ollie several times on the green as he excruciatingly over-analyzed each and every chip and putt. In Ollie’s defense, he’s been lights out around the green the last two weeks so I’ll give him all the credit for that. But for the love of God man…..(well you know the rest). Just kidding Ollie, please don’t send me an email. It’s not my fault, I have to fill a lot of blog space this week.
I think we may have some competition for Goldie in the anger management department. Radio, who unfortunately was the recipient of one of my best rounds of golf in years, had some “moments” on the course. It all started on hole #10 when it looked like he was going to easily win the hole. He hit two very good shots and was on in regulation while I was laying two off the green. On my third shot, I chipped it in for a birdie and watched him unravel unleashing all kinds of colorful language and club pounding from that point on. Halfway through the round, Radio did relax which led to better play on the way in. For all you GCCGL rookies out there, remember, a bad day on the golf course beats a good day in the office any time of the week. Other than the occasional meltdown, it was a pleasure playing with Mr. Tucker. On hole #4 the par 3, Syndrome dribbled one off the tee just left of the ladies tee. Ollie proceeds to mock Syndrome’s drive and starts talking a little smack. You know it’s a strange dynamic when Syndrome and PW are the quiet, reasonable and ethical golfers in the group. Anyway, Ollie tees up his shot and proceeds to plunk it in the pond! That’s Karma for you.
I was really looking forward to playing against Cletus this week since we’ve had some memorable rounds in past seasons. Unfortunately, Cletus and the wife were traveling to Paris! As word spread throughout the league as to the whereabouts of arguably one of the leagues more colorful characters, Gordon posed the question Paris, France or Paris, Kentucky? It’s a legitimate question. I tried to get a definitive answer out of Carrier, but it felt like I was stuck in the old Abbott and Costello “Who’s on first” bit. After several emails back and forth between myself and Carrier, I was still no closer to finding out whether Cletus went to France or went touring a distillery somewhere in central Kentucky. I know, I know….. I’m guessing several of you have no clue as to who Abbott and Costello were which is a damn shame. They were a comedy duo in the 40’s and 50’s. I grew up watching their movies every Sunday morning after church as a little kid. If you’ve never seen it before and have about 4 minutes to spare, take a look at an abbreviated version of their famous “Who’s on first” comedy routine below. As I’ve said before, our job here at the GCCGL commissioner’s office is not only to provide you with a first class top of the line golf experience but to also culture and educate our members in all facets of life and pop culture. Enjoy the video.
The big winners this week were the Massholes who obliterated Daddy Day Care (27.5 – 12.5). They were led by PW who managed 8.5 points. DDC continues their downward spiral after a great start. The Offensive Line defeated Back in Black (21 – 19). They were led by J.J. who scored 7 points. Meanwhile the first place team of Roller and Duer Again fell to The Big Bang Theory in a tight one (20.5 – 19.5). They were led by Gregg “Sizzle” Szylakowski who squeezed out 6.5 points. Yes! We finally have a nickname for Gregg! Thanks Carrier! Things are tightening up a bit. While Roller and Duer Again hold a 10.5 point lead over The Offensive Line. Only 12.75 points separate the 2nd through 5th place teams. There’s plenty of golf left!
The money winners this week were Knechtges (A/B) with a low net 29 (38 gross) and Almeida (C/D) also with a low net 29. Congratulations to the winners! Also, let’s welcome former full-time GCCGL member, Matt McLinn back into the league as a sub as he has taken over for Silent H. We added some more pictures to the GCCGL Gallery. We move to the front side of the Willows for the next two weeks. We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ‘em straight!
