2015 – Week 7
Week 7 of the GCCGL is in the books and what a week it was. The weather was near perfect albeit a little warm for this Portuguese Warrior. The attendance was perfect once again. We had only one sub fill in this week, Jenn Dominik. Thank you! We continue to have extraordinary attendance from our full-time members this season but like I said before, vacation season is just around the corner so to all you subs out there, be ready. Also, I’d like to address the delay we had off the first tee. I have asked the clubhouse to give General Cable the 5:16pm tee slot. I have not heard back from them but rest assured that your GCCGL commissioner’s office is doing everything they can to make sure this league continues to tee off on time and finish with plenty of daylight.
What a week indeed. Let’s start with the majority of everyone in the league wearing black. This was a gag concocted by Cletus, who else, and was executed almost to perfection. However, the main person who it was intended to mock, decided NOT to wear black at all. LG was one step ahead of us! Although, he confirmed that he was not tipped off, he got the last laugh as we all played in black and he looked quite comfortable in his light ensemble. One piece of information worthy of mentioning, two of Back in Black’s members wore black (Ollie and Cuzin Joe). They won their matches. The other two Back in Black members did not wear black, (LG and Legend). They lost their matches. Interesting.
The week also started off with what I would call a vail attempt at trying to stir up controversy where there wasn’t any. But hey, we’re here, we’re among friends and colleagues, so let’s discuss it. A score card from last weekend was placed on LG’s desk with a note and a score cut out with some scissors. The score that was cut out was mine. Cletus, was behind the card-cutting incident. I happened to have posted a score that was two strokes better than Cletus and maybe a stroke or two under my handicap. I admit that I stated to Cletus that I did not intend to turn in my scorecard to the GCCGL because I already have a gazillion scores in the database as is! There is no rule in the GCCGL that forces folks to turn in their scorecards outside of league match play except for new subs and/or members in order to establish their HC. The one piece of information left out of this “controversy” was that Cletus actually played 36 holes of golf last weekend. His first 18 holes at Lassing Pointe resulted in a score well under his handicap. However, there was no scorecard turned in for that round. You see what’s going on here? Cletus has been manipulating his HC for years under the Cletus HC system and now that he’s retired, he has lost control. For years, Cletus has been entering in his worst scores from his weekend golf outings which is how he’s kept his HC from going down all these years. You gotta give it to the old man; he’s been taking all our money and getting strokes to boot. But we’re onto you Cletus!
Staying on Cletus for a moment. Here’s what I like to call the OTC section of the blog, “Oh that Cletus!” As I was teeing off on the first hole, Cletus unscrewed my wheels on my push cart. After my tee shot, I went to pull my cart and well…… here is the result.
My only regret is that Cupcake didn’t get the next 15 seconds of the video! I would have had to have done some serious bleeping of choice expletives but it would have been classic! In other news, we had an incident on hole # 15. As Ollie was getting ready to tee off, Brooks nestled his cart, comfortably and seemingly out of harms way, in the small patch of woods in between the #14 and #15 fairways. Ollie tee’d off and from the second that golf ball left his driver, it was tracking directly towards Brooks’ cart like a heat seeking missile. The ball hit the metal post holding the roof on the cart. An inch or two to one side and Brooks would have had Titleist tattooed on his forehead. Brooks didn’t know this at the time but this unfortunate incident affect two matches. Anytime you hear of an instance where a golf ball either hits someone or nearly hits someone, usually Almeida is involved. Well, in a roundabout way, he was involved, again. Almeida was matched up against Ollie. Ollie’s drive was certainly headed into that patch of woods which certainly would have set him up for a horrible 2nd shot or maybe even lost ball, but as luck would have it, the ball bounces out of the woods giving Ollie a clear shot to the green and ends up with a bogey. He still loses the hole because Almeida pars it but at the end of the day, the match was lost because Ollie wound up 1 stroke better than the Portuguese Warrior. Damn you Brooks! The other match affected was Brooks vs Cupcake. Seth was so shook up he completely fell apart after that near miss. His match with Cupcake was tied the first 5 holes and he lost 3 straight after that incident costing him (and DDC) the match.
Let’s welcome Jenn Dominik who will be filling in as a permanent sub for Silent H who is moving to Cleveland. In his exit interview, Silent H lamented about his decision to leave. Not because of this new career opportunity, but because it would mean leaving the GCCGL. Once in the GCCGL, always in the GCCGL (most of the time). The MOW picks were split. LG tried some reverse psychology by picking Goldie instead of himself but Goldie defeated LG anyway. He had the score of the other MOW correct 5.5 – 4.5 but he picked the wrong winner. I fell victim to the MOW Jinx! Damn you LG! The big winners this week were The Big Bang Theory who beat The Offensive Line (24 – 16). They were led by Szylakowski who took 9 points. Back in Black are back to their losing ways after the Massholes defeated them (21.5 to 18.5). The Massholes were led by Goldie and Gordon (Carrier) who both grabbed 6.5 points. In a battle between the 1st and 2nd place teams, Duer and Roller Again sneaked past Daddy Day Care (20.5 – 19.5). They were led by Snoodles and Cupcake who both won 6.5 points. After Lickert’s loss this week, Remington remains the only undefeated member of the league at 5-0 followed closely by Carrier at 3-0-1.
We have a bunch of new photos that were added to the GCCGL Photo Album including the one below. Believe it or not, the shirt being worn by Potter and PW are the same exact shirt but look vastly different! Who does your laundry Duer? Everyone knows, when in doubt, wash in cold water and always separate your dedicates. You can’t just wave your magic wand and hope it gets done properly. Tell you what, I’m going to Lincoln in a few weeks so I’ll pick up another shirt for you so that you can put that one out of its misery. By the looks of the pic below, I take it you prefer a size medium?
The winners of the low net were Roller (A/B) with a low net of 30 and Livermore (C/D) with a low net of 31. Congratulations to the winners! We stay on the back nine of the Pioneer this week. We hope to see you on the course and as always, hit ‘em straight!
