2014 Draft
The 2014 GCCGL season is upon us and with that, the 2014 GCCGL draft has officially ended and the 2014 teams have been decided. Last year’s draft included a surprise pick by the Golf Angel when she selected co-commissioner Lipgloss as the overall #1 pick. So much for having the #1 pick in the draft, her team finished 4th overall and out of the money. Just as the NFL draft has taught us, having the #1 pick doesn’t guarantee you anything. Can you say Ki-Jana Carter?
This year’s coveted #1 pick went to Cousin Joe and he went with the smart, safe pick, Nick “Potter” Duer. No surprise here. Despite his taste for baseball teams and teenage movies, Potter put together a pretty good year last year finishing in the top 5 in points but his team finished in 5th place. This only solidifies how important team chemistry is when putting together a championship caliper GCCGL team.
Below is the 2014 GCCGL draft order:
Round 1 | Round 2 | Round 3 |
Duer *(#1 pick) | Hlebovy | Almeida |
Remington | Knechtges | Gustafson |
Eiser | Nill | McLinn |
Meyer | Cember | Rayburn |
Seiter | Carrier | Bachmann |
Bloomhuff | Petryk | Livermore |
We have 5 teams within .5 strokes of each other in average team handicap (8.50 -9.00 avg. HC). And then there’s Team Lickert (a.k.a. Balls & Dolls), sitting at an 11.5 average handicap. This was Danielle’s first GCCGL draft and by the looks of it, it shows. Most GCCGL analysts have ruled this team out before the season has even started but I caution those who have. Remember what I stated about team chemistry? Lickert went with a “theme”, two girls and two guys. This is the first team with two female members on the same team. Lickert, a polished golfer who excelled at the collegiate level. Cember, the Golf Angel, her nick name says it all. Then you have Cletus and Syndrome, who let’s face it, between the both of them have provided 90% of the GCCGL blog material over the last 10+ years. Say what you want, but this team could be a dark horse or a train wreck.
We also have the very first all-commissioner’s team in the history of the GCCGL! Kurt “Lipgloss” Kreyling somehow pulled off the unconceivable and put together this team of commissioners, named the (Putt Pirates) plus the young phenom, George “Bleeker” Remington. So much power and “influence” on one team doesn’t seem fair, but it exists and should make for an interesting season.
Other notable draft moments included “Big” Ed Petryk falling to the last pick in the 2nd round. I’m convinced the only reason this happened is because no one knows who Ed is except for us long-time GCCGL veterans. This steal fell right in the lap of Mike “Big Donkey” Harris who had to feel that the golf gods were watching over him on draft day. Big Ed is only a couple of years removed from leading his team to the GCCGL Championship on 2012. Big Donkey’s team (Morning Wood), now boasts the two longest hitters in the league. They should be a lock in the scrambles.
Rounding out the teams, we had Team Roller (Das Boots are Made for Golfing), Team Goldenberg (Schmuck Dynasty) and Team Cook (Carrier to the Hole & Duer). Sigh… What the heck kind of team name is that? Now, don’t get me wrong, we’ve had some terrible, awful team names in the past and I’m certainly responsible for my share of them. But this…..this is different somehow. It doesn’t make sense…..”Carrier to the hole”? What, are we playing, basketball? I’m stunned. The league tried to intervene and assign the first ever league issued team name but we were rebuffed. We had a couple of them in mind, like Cooked Goose, Scratch ‘N Sniff and a couple of others that had not passed the censor’s process yet. I guess this team didn’t read my post on the importance a team name has in the march for the GCCGL championship.
We have several new GCCGL members and substitutes this season. Let’s welcome our new full-time members, Lickert, Remington, Hlebovy, Seiter and Meyer who is returning after a one year hiatus. All of these folks were subs last year and were on the waiting list. If you are a sub and want to play full-time when openings come up, please make sure to get yourself on the waiting list. You can email me directly to get on the list.
For all of you who are new to the GCCGL, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, start turning in score cards so that we can begin establishing an accurate handicap for you. We cannot stress how important this is. There will be more information in the coming days. The schedule has been set for this season. Check the calendar for specifics.
Good luck to everyone!
