2013 Draft

And it begins…. The 2013 GCCGL draft took place this past week. Last year’s draft included a shocker when Syndrome inexplicitly turned the tables upside down by NOT picking a “B” player in the second  round, therefore upsetting the delicate balance of the universe (maybe that’s a little over the top), by going rogue, he unwillingly placed himself as his team’s “B” player for the entire season. His thinking placed a tremendous amount of trust in the modified USGA “Cletus”
handicap system which he thought would level the playing field. Well, the stats speak for themselves:

$0 season winnings
1 match play win all year
2 points from the bottom (this includes his sub’s points)
His team basically eliminated from contention by the 3rd week of the season en route  to a last place finish.

As for Syndrome’s decision making authority…..let’s just say that all major decisions are, now and for the unforeseeable future, made using the “one potato, two potato”  method.

This year, we had arguably the top two players of the league picked last (5 and 6) in the first round. Big Donkey (Harris) and Snoodles (Roller) were shown no respect as they watched pick after pick taken before them. This year’s overall number one pick was Kurt Kreyling? Many analysts predicted this pick from the Golf Angel, but it was still one of those rumors that you quite don’t believe until it happens, you know what I mean? This puts a lot of pressure on Kreyling (I forgot his nick name, Glitch, Stitch, something like that) especially when you consider Roller coming off one of his best seasons to date. Kurt, I’m just having some fun with you, just be happy you’re getting some ink.

Other surprises included Ollie not getting picked last, Eiser getting picked before Big Donkey and Snoodles. Also, despite several opportunities, no All-Engineering team ever materialized.

Below is the actual drafting order for the 2013 GCCGL draft:

Twitter was on fire, so I heard. I don’t have a Twitter account so this is all second hand knowledge but I did get a hold of some actual Tweets during the draft selection. Here are just a few of them.

Without a doubt this year’s first round pick will be Kurt based on the Golf Angel holding the coveted first pick.  She may shock the world but I would put all my money on  Kurt – Snoodles

The big Question is when and where will Ollie go.  I will put my money on Schemmel taking a flyer and picking Ollie – Snoodles

Don Moore will do absolutely no research and take the lowest handicap left on the board – Big Donkey

I think Donnie Golf game shocks the world and takes Nill (because he doesn’t know anyone else) – Big Donkey

I can’t believe I’m really doing a Mock draft for this – CJ

Rayburn rounds out the final pick as Mr. Irrelevant – Anonymous

And there you have it! The 2013 GCCGL team selection process is complete. Now each team has exactly until the end of day, April 12th to pick their team name. If one is not submitted by that time, you will be at the mercy of the commissioner’s office to pick a name for you and trust me, you don’t want that to happen. Click here to view your 2013 GCCGL teams. Based solely on handicaps it sure looks like Team Schemmel may be the early favorite to win the GCCGL championship but that’s what they said about AMDB last season. While they did hold the lead for most of the season last year, they fizzled out toward the end and barely finished in the money in third place!

We look forward to a great year. One more bit if news before we wrap it up, let’s all welcome Mr. Big Donkey Harris as the newest co-commissioner for the GCCGL. That’s right, Cletus has decided to retire from his co-commissioner post on the GCCGL. He will be grooming Harris for the first few weeks and then disappear into the faceless abyss of GCCGL members. No more late night meetings, endless hours of number crunching and handicap fixing and schedule manipulation. What does this mean for you? You need to work with your team to make sure you have substitutes to fill in for missing members since Big Donkey has already stated that he will NOT be the designated CALLER of SUBS. There is no excuse for teams to not call subs themselves as there are plenty of good, available substitutes who want to play!

For you new members, please save ALL your score cards and turn them in to Mike Harris, Jason Nill or myself. The more scores you have in the handicap database, the more accurate your handicap calculation will be. I can’t stress this enough. You’ve been warned.

Good luck and as always, hit ’em straight!

George Almeida, GCCGL Co-Commissioner
