Kreyling Korner – Week #18 – 08/18/16
THE LIPSMACKER MATCH OF THE WEEK
I don’t what the overall record is and I don’t really have time to look. I know it’s not good and I’ll recap it next week. Let’s get straight to the matches this week.
A/B Group – Danny “Snoodles” Roller vs. Adam “Marge” Schott. This is hard to believe, but Snoodles is actually 0-3 against Marge. As everyone knows, this week is BATTLE GOLF, and I have a theory on this match-up. It’s no secret that Danny is one, if not the best putters in the league. If Adam can win the first hole and take Danny’s putter, it could be a long long night for old Snoodles. I think that can be said in most of the matches the week of Battle Golf. In fact – I think our resident statistician (Cupcake) should actually do some analysis on this. I’d be willing bet there is a high correlation between winning the first hole and winning the whole match. GLOSSY PREDICTION – Danny and Marge tie the first hole, but Danny wins the Par 3 #11. He eventually gets the best of Adam (despite Adam putting surprisingly well with a sand wedge) 6-4.
C/D Group – Joe “Boot Boy” Eiser vs. Oliver “Ollie” Livermore. This is another battle that surprises me…Ollie is a perfect 3-0 against the Boot Boy. This match I think is a little easier to predict. Ollie doesn’t like battle golf no matter what he will tell you. In fact, the Matt McLinn Mercy Rule was written because of Ollie. Some of you may not remember, but the first year we ever played Battle Golf, Ollie and McLinn were facing off. Long story short, McLinn was whopping Ollie and somewhere towards the end of the round Ollie put on a puppy dog face and said something like “are you really going to take more of my clubs?” McLinn actually showed Ollie mercy and stopped taking clubs. Obviously, this was unacceptable to the GCCGL, hence the 3M Rule was drafted. GLOSSY PREDICTION – Ollie is a head case when it comes to Battle Golf. My advice to Joe is this, even if you lose a club or two to Ollie – when you a win a hole do not take your club back…take one of Ollies. He will fold like a lawn chair after that! Joe wins 7-3.

Before I go, I’d like to address an anonymous comment that was left on this week’s survey (we said you could leave comments anonymously, but we never said we wouldn’t offer a rebuttal when appropriate). The comment was as follows:
Stop trying to change the rules of each event the week of the event. Let’s play golf for Christ sake, that is what we signed up for.
First off, how does changing how points are awarded, or the amount of clubs that can be taken (in the event of carryover points) in Battle Golf affect actual golf played? You are still swinging the club. True, you might have to putt with your 3-wood because you lost a hole, but that’s the idea. If you don’t like Battle Golf get a sub.
Second, these are ideas to make the league more fun with the idea of keeping teams closer in the standings. I, probably more than anyone in this league, can vouch for the fact that it kind of sucks to be completely out of the running for any type of prize money after the mid-pint in the season.
Third, just so the Debbie Downer who made the comment above understands – this was actually an idea from a GCCGL member, not from the commissioner’s office. We put this idea out for vote to see what everyone thinks. If the league would have been totally onboard with the changes proposed, why wait until next year?
Finally, I think most of the GCCGL would agree that these different events, the blogs, and the surveys make the league more enjoyable. So if you want “play golf for Christ sake” you don’t need to read the blogs, or vote in the surveys – that’s definitely not golf related. We will NOT stop trying to find ways to make the league more entertaining or ways to have large point swings in the standings. If you don’t like that, I hear the Durobag league is looking for players…
